Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Saturday told Transylvanian Saxons convened for their annual reunion in Sibiu these days that they're welcome "home", wherever they've come from. Iohannis, himself an ethnic German, told a dense audience in both German and Romanian that he saw good signs in the presence of youth in the public.

Thousands of people gathered in an old square in downtown Sibiu on Saturday morning to watch a spectacular folk costumes parade put up by Transylvanian Saxons as part of their annual reunion taking place in the Central Romanian coty these days. Hundreds of Saxons from dozens of towns and villages, each with its own heritage, attended the event.

Transylvanian Saxons convening in Sibiu, central Romania for their annual reunion put up a huge show on Friday, the first of several days of events celebrating their heritage. Saxon folk music, dances and costumes drew thousands of people to downtown Sibiu in the morning, followed by an impressive Evangelical church pipe organ concert in the afternoon. The day ended with a first time projection of images from documentary film "Sibiu - 825 years" and a dance party".

Eginald Schlattner, a writer and a priest, is one of the last four ethnic Saxons still living in the town of Rosia, central Romania. A place where Saxons used to live for centuries, before their communities from across the country left abroad after the fall of communism. Each Sunday, Schlattner holds a service in the beautiful village church, despite the empty seats. "I do this to solace good God and myself", he says in an interview with HotNews.ro.

The reunion brings together a large number of members of the Saxons community, who has lived in Romania for centuries before leaving abroad en masse after the fall of communism.

"Year of Luther 2017" will also be celebrated at a reunion of Transylvanian Saxons due to take place in Sibiu on August 4-6. "We owe our identity to Reform", says Reinhart Guib, bishop of the Evangelical Church C.A. in Romania, in an interview with DW.

The citadel of Calnic was first built in early 1200's as a residence for count Chyl of Kelling, who has given the name of the village. The fortification was conceived as a massive tower to be used as a residence, surrounded by oval-shaped walls with another tower to the south and a tower gate to the north. The defense system was completed by a moat.

The fortified church of Biertan is the best known and most visited among the Saxon churches in central Romania, as it welcomes some 50,000 visitors yearly. Tourists are attracted by the age of the monument, as building the church started in the 12th century, while its size and silhouette reminding a castle from bedtime stories inspire people just like the stories of the local community.

The church of Prejmer is one of the best reserved fortified churches in Central Romania, where a large community of Transylvanian Saxons lived before leaving abroad en masse after the fall of communism. It is also one of the oldest, as it turns 800 years old next year. It also retains the supply rooms of old - 272 of them, as each house in the village had a church inside the church to keep food for harder times.

Marlies was born in Brasov, central Romania, but left for Germany with her Trasnsylvanian Saxon family shortly after the 1989 revolution, when she was 6. Most of Transylvanian Saxons left Romania at the time. In 2015, she returned to Romania, in the village of Viscri, where her husband, a Romanian, came from. When she got pregnant, she decided to come and live here, where she built a house. Her 17 months old son, David, is the only Saxon child in Viscri, a village once populated by Transylvanian Saxons.

The fortified church of Seica Mica in Sibiu county, central Romania, was built in the 14th century. Its tower was built in 1463, while the fortification of the church was accomplished in the 16th century, when it was surrounded by a three-tower defense wall, followed by other walls, including a second defense one, which was kept to this day. The church had to altars built in 1552 and 1762 respectively. The old one was stolen in 1999. The current one is made of marble.

The richest and most generous man in Germany, Hasso Platner, was born in Berlin in 1944, in a family of Transylvanian Saxon doctors from Sibiu, Romania. They had left Romania accompanying German troups. Platner is now interested in a Sibiu project, Romanian Ambassador to Berlin Emil Hurezeanu said in an interview with HotNews.ro. "Platner has never returned to Romania, he doesn't do interviews, but when he heard that the Lucian Blaga University from his parents' and ancestors' town has ideas and needs he has sent messengers to Sibiu. An important project is prepared there. I will say more when I see it standing", Hurezeanu said.

Andrea Rost was born in Germany, in East Berlin. Shortly after turning 18 and finishing school, she decided to to move to Sighisoara, Central Romania. She fell in love with the place and with the summer holidays spent here. When she came to Romania, she did not think she would stay here for life, but now, 37, says proudly that she spent more of her life in Romania than in Germany. Andrea works as a guide, showing tourists the beautiful Saxon villages and churches in Transylvania. How did she come to live in Sighisoara, when so many Romanians dream of living in Germany?

Pieces of fortifications have collapsed, the benches have been destroyed as have the floors, and parts of the pipe organ and the altar have been stolen.

"I am an organ player, it's a family tradition. My grandfather was one, I've been fascinated with the instrument, with church music from early childhood", tells Gerhild Gross, a little, blonde woman who serves as manager of the fortified church in Viscri, central Romania. She is the soft voice who explains the history of the place to tourists. Now 49, she'd left for Germany in 1992, but returned to Viscri in 2005. She sees a whole slice of history in the pipe organ of the fortified church in the village Prince Charles fell in love with. It is the history of the Saxons who had come and who left these lands.
