The European Commission will put up before June a law draft on introducing road taxes for national roads and highways according to the pollution standard of the vehicles and the level of traffic intensity, Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot declared on Thursday, in a press conference in Bucharest.

"We hope to reach a final shape of the legislation frame in the European Union in June. This frame will allow member states to apply a more coherent taxation system for all those who use the national roads and highways network. We take into account elements related to the pollution level of vehicles and the level of traffic agglomeration on certain roads", said Barrot.

The commissioner mentioned that the collected funds may be used for the development and improvement of the roads and railroads networks in the member states.
