Credem va ajunge acolo marti seara tarziu", a spus Mwangura.

    Zodiac ship taken
Somali pirates have seized a Zodiac Maritime Agencies-owned chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden.

The 13,900-dwt St James Park (built 1993) was taken on Monday, the owner confirmed to TradeWinds.

A source at the London-based company was, however, unwilling to provide further details on the incident, saying the company intends on keeping a low profile on the hijacking and is working with the relevant authorities to help secure its early release.

Andrew Mwangura, a Kenyan-based reporter on piracy off East Africa, wrote in an e-mailed statement on Tuesday that there are 26 crew onboard comprising Russians, Bulgarians, Romanians, Filipinos, Polish, Ukrainian, Georgian, Indian and Turkish seamen. A naval source confirmed there is a mixed crew of 26 onboard and that the ship was taken around 16:30 GMT.

A statement from couter-piracy coordination centre EU NAVFOR later confirmed that the crew comprises six Indians, five Bulgarians, three each from Philippines, Russia and Turkey, two each from Romania and Ukraine and one a piece from Poland and Georgia. The master is believed to be Russian.

Mwangura added that the ship was en route from Tarragona, Spain to Tha Phut in Thailand when it was taken in the International Recognised Transit Corridor (IRTC). EU NAVFOR's statement confirmed that the ship was registered with the Maritime Security Centre Horn of Africa (MSC HOA) but did not join a group transit through the corridor.

"The vessel sent a security alert 14:20 GMT (17:20 local time) [and] she also sent an unspecified distress message which was received by RCC Piraeus," Mwangura's statement read.

"She has altered course and she is now heading [south-west] towards the northern coast of Somalia. At the current course and speed she will arrive off the coast between 0300 GMT and 0600 GMT 29 December 2008," he continued.

The St James Park, which is classed by Lloyd's Register and has P&I cover with the London Club, is owned, managed and operated by Zodiac but its nominal owner is Philbox of the British Virgin Islands.

It is almost exactly one month since Somali pirates last managed to seize a large merchant vessel. In that case it was the 300,300-dwt Greek VLCC Maran Centaurus (built 1995). The John Angelicoussis-owned ship was fully-laden with crude when it was snatched in the Indian Ocean on 29 November with 28 crew.

The relative lull in seizures has been partly explained by unfavourable weather conditions for pirates in the region. The past month has, however, seen a significant number of hijacked ship being released which raised concerns that the pirates would once again turn their attention to new seizures.

Only on Monday the 1,550-teu Pacific International Lines-owned boxship Kota Wajar (built 1997) and its 21 crew were freed. The Singapore-flagged vessel was hijacked off the Seychelles on 15 October.

Cosco saw its 76,400-dwt bulker De Xin Hai (built 2008) released on Sunday. The China-flagged unit and 25 crew were snatched also off the Seychelles on 19 October.

The 2,980-dwt New Zealand-owned general cargoship Charelle (built 1985), which was hijacked off Oman on 12 June, was released on 3 December. One week later the 69,000-dwt Greek bulker Ariana (built 1984), taken off the Seychelles on 2 May, was also released.
