Televiziunea functiona si transmitea in continuare, dupa emiterea comunicatului.

Transcript: Jalil's remarks on Younes's death

Rebel leader Jalil announced Younes's death at a late press conference on Thursday night. [AFP]

With all grief and sadness, we announce the death of Major General Abdel Fattah Younes Faraj, chief of the general staff of the Libyan army, and his two comrades, Colonel Mohammed Khamis and Major Nasser Mathkour.

I will read the statement of the National Council in this regard:

At a time when our revolutionaries are achieving victory and progress on all fronts against the dictator's forces, and at a time of increasing international recognition of our revolution and the National Council as the sole legitimate ruling authority, when economic and financial conditions have been improved to resolve the current crisis, the isolated dictator regime continues threatening our revolution and vows to harm it, its symbols and heroes.

During the last few days, the regime has mentioned by name one of the heroes of February 17 revolution, General Abdel Fattah Younes, threatening him through its media and saying that good news will be heard about him soon. Some of the regime's defected media announced the same news through other TV channels.

Today, we learned that Major General Abdel Fattah Younes Faraj and his two companions were shot by gunmen after he was summoned to appear before a judicial committee to investigate military affairs. But the deceased did not appear before this committee, because of the procedures that happened to him, which are under investigation.

The head of the armed group, one of them that actually carried out the assassination, was arrested.

Air Strikes Destroy Libya State TV Dishes in Tripoli, NATO Says
    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2011/07/29/bloomberg1376-LP4SRU07SXKX01-59EN6OR25SKIBSO8P9GQ9R906F.DTL

July 30 -- Fighter aircraft destroyed three satellite transmission dishes in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, used by state television to broadcast government propaganda, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said.

The air strikes will reduce Muammar Qaddafi's ability to mobilize supporters and intimidate the Libyan people, while preserving "broadcast infrastructure that will be needed after the conflict," NATO said in a statement on its website today.

As the alliance's military campaign in Libya enters its fifth month, the conflict remains at a stalemate, with Qaddafi retaining control of Tripoli, and rebel offensives in recent weeks failing to capture Brega in the east or Zlitan, near Misrata, in the west.

The rebels' Transitional National Council is recognized by about 30 nations as Libya's legitimate governing authority. The council is investigating the death of rebel military chief Abdel Fattah Younis, who was shot dead earlier this week along with two of his aides.

Al-Qaeda was behind the assassination, proving the rebels have no power even in their stronghold of Benghazi, Sky News cited Moussa Ibrahim, a spokesman for Qaddafi, as saying yesterday.

The situation behind the death is "still unclear," U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said yesterday. The U.S. envoy in Benghazi is talking to the TNC and "trying to get a clearer idea of what happened," Toner told reporters in Washington ...

Libya rebels say Younis killers were 'Islamist element'
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jul/30/libya-general-younis-islamists-blamed
The gunmen who shot dead the Libyan rebels' military chief Abdel Fatah Younis were members of an Islamist-linked militia allied to the campaign to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi, according to a National Transitional Council minister.
After 24 hours of confusion surrounding the death, the NTC's oil minister, Ali Tarhouni, said Younis had been killed by members of the Obaida Ibn Jarrah Brigade, a militia named after one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, suggesting that Islamist elements were involved.
Tarhouni told reporters in Benghazi that a militia leader who had gone to fetch Younis from the frontline had been arrested and had confessed that his subordinates carried out the killing. "It was not him. His lieutenants did it," Tarhouni said, adding that the killers were still at large.
The NTC leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil said on Thursday that Younis had been recalled for questioning to Benghazi but was killed before he arrived. Relatives said they retrieved a burned and bullet-riddled body ...

"It should not be called the Security Council. It should be called the Terror Council. "

[ ... Most of Mr. Tarhouni's account of the events leading up to Mr. Younis' death was corroborated earlier in the day by one of Mr. Younis' longtime body guards, Abdullah Baio.
Mr. Baio said in an interview that Mr. Younis returned to Benghazi after he was summoned by a rebel brigade in his own vehicle accompanied by his personal guard detail, which included five body guards as always.[DETAIL = group with special task: a group of people, especially in the armed services, given a specific task]
At 10 a.m., Mr. Younis called his family in Benghazi to tell them he was on his way back, his nephew, Abdel Hakim, said at his funeral. Mr. Younis and his guards stopped at a military base in Gammines, on Benghazi's outskirts, according to Mr. Baio. It isn't clear why Mr. Younis stopped at the base.
Inside the base, soldiers from the Abu Obaida Al-Jarah Brigade turned their weapons on Mr. Younis and his bodyguards, according to Mr. Baio's account. Mr. Younis ordered his outnumbered guards to lower their weapons.
The rogue unit disarmed Mr. Younis' guards, stole their boots, and tied them up, before disappearing with Mr. Younis, Mr. Baio said. At 2 a.m. the next morning, Mr. Younis' body and those of two of his subordinate officers, were found shot and burned not far from Mr. Younis's home]
