"The Artist" a castigat trofeul pentru cel mai bun film la editia din acest an a Premiilor Oscar. Pelicula alb-negru, care este un omagiu adus filmelor mute de la Hollywood, a fost recompensata si cu alte doua premii importante: cel mai bun regizor (Michel Hazanavicius) si cel mai bun actor in rol principal (Jean Dujardin). In total, "The Artist" a castigat cinci premii Oscar.
Cea de-a 84-a editie a decernarii Premiilor Oscar s-a desfasurat duminica noapte la Hollywood & Highland Center (fostul Kodak Theatre) din Los Angeles si a fost prezentata de actorul Billy Crystal, cel care a mai fost gazda ceremoniei si in alte opt editii anterioare.
Anul acesta, au fost nominalizate la Oscarul pentru cel mai bun film noua pelicule, printre care "The Artist" si "The Descendants", castigatoare la Globurile de Aur, dar si "The Tree of Life", castigatorul Palme d'Or la Cannes in 2011. Pelicula 3D "Hugo", a lui Martin Scorsese, a obtinut cele mai multe nominalizari - 11, fiind urmata de "The Artist", cu 10 nominalizari.
