Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu declared on Friday that the decision to suspend the registration tax for new cars will come into force on December 15, the latest, given the fact that the European Commission officials were late in accepting the measure.

Tariceanu says that he informed the European Commission on the Government’s decision to suspend the tax, but the answer is still expected.

The Government decided on November 19 to suspend, between December 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009, the car tax for vehicles powered by engines under 2,000 cubic centimeters, Euro 4 standard compliant.

The car tax, introduced in the Fiscal Law in 2007, was an issue that stirred discontent in the European Union, being considered as a breaking of the EU Accession Treaty. Until the setting of all details, in July 2008, the tax underwent through a series of significant changes.
