Romania didn't obtain even one Euro out of the 5.5 billion Euros the European Union has available for the construction of highways and infrastructure modernization, said president Traian Basescu on Tuesday, during the annual reunion of the Romanian diplomacy.

"We joined the European Union in January 2007 and we failed to obtain even one Euro from the highway construction funds. 2008 ends and we haven't got a highway construction program. This raises a problem which is not in Brussels, but it is ours", said Basescu. The president also pointed at the fact that Romanian authorities failed to put up any feasibility study or any bid conditions notebook for the construction of highways.

"It is a matter that depends on Romania exclusively. It is a question of incompetence, in other words, and we will have to make an effort to recover the highway construction and the railroad modernization programs.

The president notes that the environment programs are going well, but criticized the Governmental and Parliamentarian actions related to the Justice system.

Referring to the relationship with Russia, Basescu asked for a pragmatic, non-political attitude.
