1.What the newspapers say: November 1, 2006 Things finally look fine: Romanians have a new European Commissioner candidate that everyone seems to like. Still, not all things are pink in Romania, with the battle against corruption - president Basescu’s main promise in the electoral campaign - moved from the former ministers to journalists.
2.Russian energy monopoly makes Black Sea reforms difficult The Black Sea reforms become increasingly difficult because of the Russian energy monopoly in the area, said president Basescu on Tuesday, during a video conference intervention in the international conference on “Black Sea Economic development and security”.Basescu believes that the regressing liberalization and privatization in Russia should determine the Unites States to include the Europe-Asia energy strategy in the trans-Atlantic dialogue agenda.
3.Three die in refinery accident At least the employees died on Wednesday in an explosion at the RAFO Onesti refinery, caused by gas accumulation in of the factory’s departments. The explosion came at 11.50 AM, while the refinery was still in a revision period. One of the managers claims that the workers didn’t respect the installation opening procedures. The same equipment caused another accident with two victims two years ago.
4.Steaua Bucharest vs. Real Madrid tonight Romanian football team Steaua Bucharest plays one of its last chances in the UEFA Champions League tonight, against Real Madrid. Some players expect a game less aggressive from the Spanish champions, since Real is already qualified after its 4-1 victory in Bucharest. The legendary Bernabeu stadium is going to be filled at maximum, with all tickets being sold weeks ago.
5.Petrom to build 70 million euros gas processing unit The oil company Petrom will invest over 70 million euros in order to build a new gas processing unit in Midia, designed to treat the gas extracted in seas operations. The engineering, acquisition and construction operations were attributed to Linde Group.
6.The Sun: "Romanians threat UK's security" UK tabloid The Sun spearheads a press campaign against the Romanian immigrants in England, launching a new media bomb in its Tuesday edition: “Romanians are responsible for 80% of the ATM thefts”. The information is supposedly contained in a “secret memo of the Blair Cabinet”, quoted by the tabloid. The document would draw the attention towards the fact that Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession could represent a criminal wave heading for the island.
7.Belene nuclear plant has Russian constructors The Russian group Atomstroyexport, with Gazprom as majority shareholder, won the bid on the construction of a nuclear plant near the Danube, in the Bulgarian town of Belene.
8.Vosganian: "Barroso asked if I were an irredentist" Varujan Vosganian, the first candidate for the European Commissioner seat, discussed for the first time the questions the EC president, Jose Manuel Barroso, asked him before the rejection. Varujan claims in the “Stirea Zilei” TV show on Antena 3 that Barroso asked him whether he was an irredentist or not.
9.Human rights militant arrested Florentin Scaletchi, leader of the “Human Rights Protection Organization” (OADO) was taken into custody by the anti corruption prosecutors, on grounds related to taking bribe. The prosecutors are currently searching the OADO headquarters. Scaletchi was supposed to participate on Wednesday evening in a conference on the “Lustration Law - Too Late”. His expected intervention was supposed to have the theme “For a clean Parliament. Why?”
10.Real Madrid - Steaua Bucharest - 1:0 15,000 Romanians watched live how Steaua made one of its best appearances in a game doomed to failure. Surprisingly, Romanians had a game almost as good as the “half billion club”, with three huge occasions wasted during the first half. The victory goal was in fact scored by one of the Romanian players, Banel Nicolita, after an incredible mistake 20 minutes before the end of the game.

Proiectul urmeaza sa fie dezbatut la Camera Deputatilor. Potrivit actului normativ, autoritatile ar urma sa infiinteze o administratie care se va ocupa „cu desfasurarea de aplicatii locale de modificare a vremii“.
12.300 de milioane de euro pentru 20 de parkinguri subterane Primarul general, Adriean Videanu, cere astazi aprobarea consilierilor municipali pentru a cheltui peste 300 de milioane de euro. Aceasta este suma pe care Videanu intentioneaza sa o bage in amenajarea a 20 de parkinguri subterane. In prima etapa, constructia va incepe doar pe 14 amplasamente din cele 90 de locatii identificate de municipalitate.
13.Impozite cu 20% mai mari pe case si terenuri Valorile de impozitare ale proprietatilor din Bucuresti se vor majora cu 15% din 2007. Astfel cumulate, cresterile conduc la impozite pe case si terenuri, in medie, cu 20% mai mari fata de anul acesta si la dublari si chiar cresteri spectaculoase ale sumelor datorate statului de posesorii de masini.
14.AVAS vinde terenuri la jumatate din pretul pietei Omul de afaceri Nicolae Ratiu, fiul fostului politician Ion Ratiu, a cumparat de la AVAS un teren cu o suprafata de aproape 30.000 metri patrati, in zona autostrazii Bucuresti-Pitesti, cu 593.000 de dolari, suma de doua ori mai mica decat valoarea de piata a terenului.

Expertii sunt de parere ca rezultatele studiului vor spulbera miturile populare privind comportamentul sexual si vor ajuta la formularea unor noi politici de sanatate.
