1.What the newspapers say: October 30, 2006 The Romanian media on Monday take as a certainty the nomination of ex-EU accession negotiator Leonard Orban as future representative of the country in the European Commission, after the first nominee was forced to withdraw. Even the President speaks on the matter in an interview for one daily. Each newspaper supplements its offer with revelations of abuses and corruption but also with success stories, both individual and national.
2.Ex-EU negotiator to replace senator as Romania's European commissioner nominee Leonard Orban, a state secretary at the Romanian EU Integration Ministry who had a key role in accession negotiations over the past several years, is the second nominee the Romanian government will push to represent the country in the European Commission, according to official sources quoted by the NewsIn press agency and other media. Orban replaces Senator Varujan Vosganian, who this weekend has asked for the withdrawal of his candidacy after a series of revelations about him.
3."Fewer jobs" for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens in the UK The British Home Secretary John Reid may cut by half the number of jobs available for Romanian and Bulgarian workers after the accession of the two countries in the EU in January 2007. According to The Sunday Times, quoting a secret Home Office document, Reid planned to force British agriculture employers to replace immigrant workers from non-EU countries such as Russia or Ukrain with Romanian and Bulgarian workers.
4.Romania rejects AI charges on Congo embargo Checks in the African country of Congo as part of a campaign to fight arms trafficking have led to the discovery of weapons from Russia, China, Greece, the US but also from Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria, an Amnesty International spokesperson has announced, quoted by British newspaper The Scotsman. Romanian officials promptly rejected allegations of breaching the Congo embargo this weekend.
5.Bulgarian nuclear shutdown worries Balkans Across the region, energy officials are keenly concerned by the imminent closure of two of the plant’s four Soviet-built reactors by December 31, the last day before Bulgaria joins the European Union. EU officials have made closure a precondition for accession.
6.Erste Bank reports 28% profit, BCR aside Austrian banking group Erste Bank reports a net profit of 649.3 million euro profit in the first nine months of the year, up from 508.8 million, with the total value of assets growing 6% from 152.7 billion by the end of 2005 to 162.6 billion. The operational profit grew 16.2.% to 1,398.8 million euro during the period, while operational income grew 9.9% to 3,511.1 million.
7.Managers expect prices grow in all economic sectors Romanian managers expect an increase in activities in the manufacturing, retail and services sectors in the fourth quarter of the year while the construction works sector will see a drop in activities, according to a study by the National Statistics Institute - INS. Interviewed managers say that prices are expected to grow in all economic sectors as a result of the trend.
8.Media group managers under criminal inquiry for blackmail Six members of the regional media group Gazeta Trust were placed under criminal investigation on Monday, charged with the creation of a crime group and blackmail. They face hearings before anti-organized crime prosecutor’s office DIICOT in Cluj, north-western Romania, according to reports today.
9.Frig si precipitatii in aproape toata tara Administratia Nationala de Meteorologie anunta ca de luni, vremea se va raci in majoritatea regiunilor tarii. Vantul va bate cu putere, in estul teritoriului vor cadea precipitatii mixte, iar la munte va ninge. 17 judete au primit atentionare meteorologica cu cod galben. Marea va fi agitata iar valurile, in larg, pot ajunge chiar si la sapte metri.
10.Peste 100 mii de elevi primesc "bani de liceu" Peste 100000 de elevi vor beneficia de bani de liceu in anul scolar 2006 - 2007, potrivit unui comunicat de presa al Ministerului Educatiei si Cercetarii (MEdC). Prin programul national de protectie sociala "Bani de liceu", MEdC va acorda un sprijin financiar lunar de 180 RON tuturor candidatilor, 104 474 elevi, care au solicitat bursa in acest an si care s-au dovedit eligibili.

Partenerul oficial al Expoconferinta Constructor a fost Banca Romaneasca, care a prezentat cu aceasta ocazie o serie de produse specifice industriei Constructiilor.
13.Primele trei firme din Romania Cele mai profitabile trei firme care activeaza in Romania au fost, anul trecut, Petrom, Orange si Vodafone si au cumulat un profit de peste un miliard de euro (3,8 miliarde lei), potrivit clasamentului realizat de Consiliul National al Intreprinderilor Private Mici si Mijlocii (CNIPMMR).
14.Cu 9 euro la Roma sau Budapesta Compania aeriana low-cost Sky Europe estimeaza ca va transporta 150.000 de pasageri in 2007 ca urmare a introducerii a doua noi curse din Bucuresti spre Roma, din 12 ianuarie si Budapesta, de la 1 februarie 2007.
15.Expozitie de futurism Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge este un concurs de creatie organizat anual inaintea Salonului Auto de la Detroit. Miza acestui concurs anual este imensa, premiantii fiind de obicei cooptati in echipele de design ale marilor constructori ai lumii. La concurs pot participa insa si echipe de designeri care formeaza deja birouri de creatie in cadrul producatorilor auto.

17.Gandul, intr-un nou format Din 30 octombrie, cotidianul Gandul va aparea intr-un nou format ca urmare a unui amplu proces de relansare la nivel grafic si structural. Principalele schimbari sunt trecerea pe format Berliner, cresterea numarului de pagini la 32 - de luni pana joi - si 24 in zilele de vineri si sambata, dintre care 8 pagini color, dar si regandirea structurii editoriale.

Deconspirarea acestuia a fost facuta recent, in urma cererilor adresate Consiliului National pentru Studierea Arhivelor Securitatii de catre un alt preot, Costica Maftei.
20.Vaduvele minerilor de la Anina, terorizate pentru a-si tine gura Ancheta penala declansata de procurorii Parchetului de pe langa Tribunalul Caras-Severin cu privire la moartea a sapte mineri de la Exploatarea Anina, ucisi in urma unei explozii produse la 14 ianuarie a.c., l-a scos in final vinovat chiar pe unul dintre ortacii care au pierit in subteran. Este vorba despre artificierul Danut Puscau (39 de ani), care nu a putut si nici nu va mai putea vreodata sa se apere de acuzele care i-au fost aduse.
