1.What the newspapers say: October 17, 2006 Romania prepares for the clash between Steaua Bucharest and Real Madrid tonight, and the media makes no exception. A resignation en masse from the country’s best selling tabloid is making waves throughout front pages today. They also mock at the British over plans to introduce a new rule in Universities, reminiscent of the communist past of an influential Liberal teacher in Romania. 2.Liberal dissident resigns from Presidency A Liberal dissident who was ousted from the National Liberal Party-PNL last week and presented an alternative Liberal platform over the weekend announced his resignation from the presidential administration on Monday night in order to focus on his new political project.
3.EP investigators to receive gifts from Romanian protocol fund The Romanian Parliament commissions overviewing the activities of the main intelligence services in the country have requested access to protocol funds to cover spendings during the visit to Bucharest of representatives of a European Parliament commission investigating alleged CIA illegal activities in Europe. Part of the money will be spent on “symbolic gifts” for EP investigators.
4.IFC offers 10 mln euro to MedLife The International Finance Corporation-IFC, the investment division of the World Bank, has concluded a funding contract with the MedLife company providing a 5 million euro loan for a ten year period, according to a joint press release. IFC also bought a 20% stake in the private health services provider for another five million euro.
5.Steaua in historic match against Real Madrid on home turf Romanian football champion Steaua will face visiting Real Madrid, the world’s most reputed football club, on the Ghencea Stadium in Bucharest tonight. The match, counting for Group E of the Champions League, is seen as a major sports show in Romania and the large number of Real stars including Ronaldo, David Beckham and Fabio Cannavaro has prompted a maximum risk alert for the Romanian police, which will sent some 1,300 gendarmes and policemen to guard the event.
6.At least nine Romanians wounded in Rome subway At least nine Romanians were wounded in a major subway crash in Rome on Tuesday. The Romanian Consulate to the Italian Capital stated for HotNews.ro that the nine were all hospitalized in the San Giovanni hospital in the city. The total number of Romanian citizens wounded in the car crash is yet unknown as checks continue other hospitals where victims of the accident have been sent.
7.Romania up to 24th worldwide in terms of investment attractivity Romania grew seven places to 24th worldwide in the latest World Investments Report (WIR), published by the UN Conference for Trade and Development-UNCTAD on Monday. The report says the total amount of foreign direct investments globally grew 29% to 916 billion USD last year with the United Kingdom, the US and China taking the three most luring spots in the world.
8.Bucharest northern gate road closed for four more days The Bucharest city hall has announced the main road linking Bucharest to Ploiesti remains closed on a considerable portion north of Bucharest until Sunday, 22 October due to continuing works in the area.
9.Alleged Romanian spy freed A Romanian citizen accused of conducting spying activities in Nigeria was freed on bail on Tuesday, the Romanian Ambassador to Nigeria Emil Rapcea has confirmed for AFP. Other five persons - one Jewish, one Israeli and three Nigerians - charged in the same case last week were also freed.
10.MEPs check CIA prisons allegations Members of the European Parliament team investigating the alleged existence of CIA prisons in Romania have started a three day visit to Romania which might include a check of the Constanta-based Mihail Kogalniceanu airport, the place where CIA planes are said to have landed.
11.Real smashes Steaua in Bucharest: 1-4 Real Madrid defeated Steaua with an unquestionable 1-4 despite consistent resistance from the Romanian eleven on Bucharest’s Ghencea stadium on Tuesday night. On the third leg of the Champions League Group E matches, Real delivered two quick goals by break and continued with another two in the second half of the game, when Steaua also scored once.
12.Debransati de la utilitati din cauza ilegalitatilor Clujenii care au cumparat locuinte in blocuri construite fara autorizatie risca sa ramina, in pragul iernii, fara curent electric, gaze sau apa. Echipe de control ale institutiilor statului au trecut la verificarea tuturor constructiilor ilegale.

14.Schimbare la varful Serviciului Teritorial Anticoruptie Alba Procurorul Mugurel Pamfil, care a renuntat la functia de sef al Serviciului Anticoruptie Alba Iulia, a fost inlocuit cu Liana Boer, de la Parchetul Judecatoriei Aiud. Daca activitatea lui Pamfil a fost relativ modesta, numele Lianei Boer se leaga de unele procese castigate de sotul ei, avocat, la baroul din Aiud.
15.Restaurantul din Bastion, desfiintat cu ajutorul Justitiei Presedintele Consiliului Judetean Timis, Constantin Ostaficiuc, a anuntat ca il va da in judecata pe patronul unui restaurant din incinta Bastionului, Mircea Tonenchi. Si asta, deoarece administratorul nu vrea sa paraseasca spatiul ocupat in cladirea istorica, iar autoritatile sunt in imposibilitatea de a trece la proiectul de reabilitare a imobilului.
16.Executor judecatoresc urmarit penal pentru abuz in serviciu Procurorii de la Parchetul de pe langa Judecatoria Gherla (judetul Cluj) au inceput urmarirea penala impotriva unuia dintre executorii judecatoresti din oras. El este acuzat de abuz in serviciu dupa ce ar fi "aranjat" vanzarea la licitatie a unui imobil.
17.Prefectii se instruiesc la Targu-Mures Functionarii publici din tara vor trebui, timp de patru zile, sa se descurce fara prefecti deoarece reprezentantii Guvernului in teritoriu si-au lasat deoparte fotoliile si au venit la Targu-Mures pentru a participa la adunarea generala a Asociatiei prefectilor si subprefectilor din Romania.
18.Autorii unui atac de tip mafiot, trimisi in judecata Patru prahoveni si un bistritean au fost trimisi in judecata de procurorii Parchetului de pe langa Tribunalul Bistrita-Nasaud pentru comiterea infractiunilor de complicitate la si tentativa de omor calificat. Acestia au participat la o reglare de conturi in lumea mafiota, atacand trei persoane intr-un bar din Bistrita cu bate de baseball si topoare.
19.Presedintele Consiliului Judetean Alba, investigat de consilieri Consilierii PSD din Alba au reusit, dupa mai multe incercari, sa impuna pe ordinea de zi a CJ posibilitatea infiintarii unei comisii care sa ancheteze "presupusele abuzuri" ale presedintelui institutiei, Ion Dumitrel (PD).
