1.What the newspapers say: September 5, 2006 One newspaper on Tuesday digs deeper into a story of weddings and criminal deals involving Economy minister Codrut Seres. A deal between Romanian mogul Ion Tiriac and Mercedes for the distribution of cars in the country is heralded across the media. Today’s papers see the main opposition party in trouble following the departure of an influential witness - but so seems the governing coalition as well. And many dailies focus on Romania’s social and economic relations with its neighbors and with Europe.
2.Romania average salary reaches 842 RON in July The net average salary of Romanians rose slightly in July this year, 0.8% up to 842 RON, according to data the National Statistics Institute - INS presented on Tuesday. In June, it rose 0.2% compared to the previous month.
3.Russia eyes full control over Balkans oil route Russia joined Bulgaria and Greece in announcing recently the construction of a Burgas-Alexandropolis pipeline to carry Caspian oil from Russia towards Western Europe. The move shows Moscow still finds it hard to get along with alternative transport projects involving Caspian oil which try to dodge Russia’s energy near-monopoly in Europe.
4.Competition Council approves Emporiki Bank takeover by Credit Agricole The Competition Council has approved the takeover of Emporiki Bank by Credit Agricole SA, finding that the deal does not perturb the banking market by affecting competition in this sector.
5.Financial Times: Romania and Bulgaria to face strictest accession terms Romania and Bulgaria will join the EU at the set date of January 1, 2007, but will face some of the strictest terms ever applied to new member states, the Financial Times reports in its Tuesday edition.
6.Romania's rating upgraded to positive, says S&P Romania’s perspective of joining the EU improved Standard&Poor’s rating from stable to positive. The economic and institutional performances contributed to the favourable evaluation. S&P maintained the “BBB-“and “A-3” ratings for Romania’s long-term and short-term debt levels in foreign and national currencies.
7.Prosecutors search arrested prefect's office The National Anti-Corruption Department prosecutors searched the office of the prefect of Eastern Romanian county of Iasi on Tuesday, following the release of a 29 days-arrest mandate on September 1.The office of the Iasi state property administration, Flaviu Ionita, was also searched.
8.Back to school. Back to protests The labour unions in Education threaten to boycott the beginning of the new school year due to the discontent with the Government’s offer regarding the salary raise of the teachers. The Education, Finances and Labour ministers met with the representatives of the education Unions on Tuesday to discuss the salary project law that should provision a status upgrade and a salary raise for the professors.
9.Troubled waters within National Liberal Party The Liberal young deputy Raluca Turcan resigned from the Party’s management on Tuesday, following her dismissal from the Parliament’s Culture Comission yesterday. She accused her former party fellows of communist practices after the expulsion of two top Liberal figures and the actions against her and fellow Cristian Boureanu.
10.Romanian tractor maker still on float line The tractor maker factory in central Romanian town of Brasov “Tractorul” is still functioning following the Authority for State Assets Recovery’s (AVAS) decision to continue providing it with electric power.
11.Romania nervous about September EC report The Romanian minister of European integration considers that it is still early to say whether Romania’s shortcomings would trigger any safeguard clause, however, this is to be decided by the European Commission following consultation with the member states. The statement came in a press conference today, one day before the official reunion of the European ministers in Brussels on Sept, 6.

19.Compania Macromex curteaza Tetarom IV Cel de-al patrulea parc industrial ar urma sa se dezvolte pe o suprafata de teren situata pe strada Oasului, spre Valea Chintaului. Directorul Tetarom, Viorel Gavrea, a sustinut ca a fost identificat acolo un teren care masoara circa 40 de hectare si care s-ar afla in patrimoniul Consiliului Local Cluj-Napoca.
