1.President warns of Romanian retaliation about possible EU labour restrictions Romanian President Traian Basescu warned in an interview with the International Herald Tribune in late August that a recent clash of opinions in Britain on a possible wave of immigrant workers from Romania once the country joins the EU is a politically fueled issue. He said opinions of several British officials and politicians that restrictions should be imposed to stave off an expected flow of Romanian immigrants has nothing to do with current realities in Romania.
2.Prefect retained in bribery case The prefect of Eastern Romanian county of Iasi was retained and brought to the National Anti-Corruption Department under bribery charges late on Thursday, August 31. According to various news sources, Prefect Radu Prisacariu was retained over accepting a bribe constisting of a three-hectare property to intervene in in a retrocession case.
3.Autumn promises spectacular changes in Romanian banking sector The Romanian banking system prepares for a fast autumn after a mild month of August where the sole show was provided by the Romanian Commercial Bank, recently bought by Erste Bank. The coming period promises more speed with the privatization of the Romanian Savings House and the HVB-Tiriac-Unicredit merger.

5.National Bank governor: inflation target can be achieved Romanian National Bank-BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu announced in mid-August that his institution expected an inflation rate of 6.1% by the end of the year, 0.7 percentage points below the May forecast. Isarescu said a considerable more precision should be expected when the Bank provides its report on inflation in November. According to Isarescu, the annual inflation rate on June 30, 2006 stood at 7.1%, 1.3 percentage points below the March 2006 level and 0.9 points below forecast.
6.Transelectrica listed on Stock Exchange Romanian electricity company Transelectrica was listed at the Bucharest Stock Exchange Tuesday, August 29, after more than a year and a half of preparations that laid the ground for a new phase in the privatization of the Romanian energy sector.
7.Romania reviews its military presence abroad Romanian President Traian Basescu announced August 30 that the country is about to reduce its military participation to the international coalition in Iraq after the Iraqi army said they were ready to take control over a region of the country where a Romanian battalion is present. The news comes several days after the head of state said the Supreme Defense Council in Bucharest opted that Romania should not send troops to Lebanon, as the UN has called.
8.Romanian film hope killed in road accident A young hope of Romanian cinematography, a fellow sound engineer and a taxi driver were killed on August 25 when the cab they were in was hit by a fast-driving Briton at a crossroads in downtown Bucharest.
9.Steaua Bucharest to face Real Madrid in Champions League Romanian football team Steaua Bucharest learned August 24 that it would face Real Madrid, Olympique Lyon and Dinamo Kiev in the E Group of the Champions League after beating Standard Liege in the preliminaries. It is the first time in ten years that a Romanian team reaches the Champions League groups. Steaua managed to defeat Standard Liege 2-1 despite three key players were missing at the game. The two goals were scored by Valentin Badea.
10.Romania prevents conflict with Iran over Gulf oil operations Romanian authorities tried successfully to avoid a diplomatic conflict with Iran in mid-August after some 20 workers, most of them Romanians, were caught in a middle of what eventually was settled to be a “trade dispute” that led to the seizure of a Romanian-run oil rig in the Persian Gulf. The rig was run by Grup Servicii Petroliere - GSP, a Romanian company that accused Iran of attacking the rig with projectiles before taking control of it - and of the workers on the platform.
11.Romanian society heats up to Securitate past A wave of revelations on people who collaborated with the dreaded Securitate, ex-dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s secret police, hit the Romanian society hard in August. Dozens of people at the forefront of current Romanian politics, economy, justice, media and culture were officially charged or simply accused or even alleged to have collaborated with the Securitate in an unprecedented, continuing wave that follows similar but less consistent moves in this regard earlier this year.
12.Romania trade deficit down to 7.03 bln euro Romania’s trade imbalance deepened in the first seven months of 2006 as the National Statistics Institute-INS announced a trade deficit of 7.03 bln euro after the period on Friday. Government trade official Iuliu Winkler admitted the industry performance, economic growth and restructuring investments generated a larger demand in imports but said they all supported an expansion of exports and better export structure.

Fotoreporterii ZIARULUI au surprins asfaltarile de pe Nicolae Teclu facute pe o ploaie patrunzatoare. Si celelalte lucrari ale Strabag sunt date peste cap.
17.Prima bataie cu zapada de anul acesta Nopti albe la Balea Lac si la propriu si la figurat. Prima zapada consistenta din acest sezon a acoperit muntii la peste 2000 de metri altitudine, iar turistii nu au putut dormi nici un minut in noaptea de miercuri spre joi.
18.Consilieri de cladire noua. De 110 miliarde Obisnuita sedinta lunara de Consiliu Local Sibiu a avut ieri un iz aparte. Izul venea de la vopseaua proaspata din sala de sedinte aflata in noul sediu al Primariei Sibiu. Caci, in rest, aceeasi monotonie a acoperit prezenta celor 20 si ceva de consilieri locali care au votat ca la comanda. In cladirea ce a fost reparata cu 110 miliarde.
19.A treia incercare. Sibiul are din nou volei de senioare Clubul Sportiv Municipal are din nou sectie de volei. La insistentele prefectului Ion Ariton, a carui fiica este componenta a formatiei de junioare a Clubului Sportiv Scolar, conducerea CSM le-a legitimat pe vicampioanele nationale si le-a inscris in a doua divizie de senioare.
20.BCC a inaugurat a zecea unitate din Sibiu: Carpatica in Piata Mare Banca Comerciala Carpatica a inaugurat reprezentanta din Piata Mare, a zecea unitate din judetul Sibiu. Numarul unitatilor bancare BCC din tara se apropie de 200.
