2.US citizen of Romanian origin may be behind of NY explosion The possible authori of an explosion that caused the collapse of a building on Madison Avenue in New York on Monday is Nicholas Bartha, a US citizen of Romanian descent, NY Times reports on Tuesday. Bartha, 66, who’s gone through a difficult divorce, allegedly tried to get avenge by putting the three-storey building he owned on fire.
3.Audience of 5,000 celebrates Billy Idol in Bucharest Some 5,000 people packed the Roman Arenas in Bucharest on Monday night for an unprecedented Billy Idol gig that included the Rebels’ most renowned hits. Billy Idol is the latest in a string of music stars that included Romania in their European tours this year, including Depeche Mode, Shakira and 50 Cents.
4.Inflation rate stood above 7% in June While the inflation rate sped down in June with 0.15% compared to 0.16% in May this year, it failed to drop below the 7% level as happened in April 2006, according to the latest data published by the National Statistics Institutre. The inflation rate for June stood at 7.11% last month, the data shows.
5.Romanian population down, statistics show The population of Romania stood at 21.6 million by January 1, 2006, with a slight female advantage of 51.2% compared to 48.8% for males. More than half of the population live in urban areas, with the area of Bucharest-Ilfov reporting a 92.5% urban population, the National Statistics Institute has announced.
6.Mobishop launches Romanian brand of electronic pay store Mobishop, the Telecom division of the RTC Group, launches the first Romanian brand of electronic payment system - Pay Store which enables financial trades from a Pay Store terminal placed in different locations.
7.Turkey exports cars to Romania and Bulgaria of over USD 263 mln In the first six months of the year, the values of Turkish cars exported to Romania and Bulgaria topped 263 million dollars, according to Turkish Daily News. The Turkish cars export to EU countries valued at USD 5.3 Euros represents 72% of the total exports value of USD 7.4 bln, while exports to Romania and Bulgaria 3.5%.
8.New Conservative deputy-PM for Romanian govt The Conservative Party (CP) member Bogdan Pascu was appointed the new deputy prime minister responsible with coordination of business environment and SMEs, thus replacing his party fellow George Copos who resigned in early June. The post was eyed by the PC leader Dan Voiculescu who withdrew following the accusations by the authority studying the former Securitate archives of having collaborated with the former communist militia.
9.Romanian president urges authorities to be vigilant in fighting piracy Romanian president Traian Basescu admitted that the phenomenon of piracy is very much present in Romania manifesting in almost all economic fields, and the inefficacity of fighting it comes from the lack of efficient cooperation among authorities. The declaration was presented in the Eastern Europe-Central Asia Regional Congress organized in Bucharest in order to combat piracy and counterfeiting.
10.National Bank of Greece targets both CEC and Serbian Bank National Bank of Greece, the biggest Greek bank in term of assets value, plans to buy both the Romanian Savings House (CEC) and Serbia's fifth largest bank, Vojvodanska Banka, according to Forbes. The submission of bids for a 69.9 % stake in Romania's CEC ends on July 17.
