1.What the newspapers say: July 3, 2006 A series of storms across Romania over the weekend draw most media attention on Monday, with reports of many dead and missing and of extensive damage especially in the county of Suceava. Newspapers today also tackle the effects of the political disputes sparked last week by a request to withdraw Romanian troops from Iraq. And a statement by President Basescu regarding the accession of the Moldovan Republic to the EU promises renewed criticism for the leadership in Bucharest.
2.Extreme weather returns to Romania At least eight people died and four were missing following a wave of torrential rain, mudslides and floods that struck many parts of Romania over the weekend. According to a Interior Ministry preliminary toll, some 34 towns and villages in six counties have been affected by extreme weather since Friday.
3.62% of Romanians disagree with troops presence in Iraq Almost two thirds of Romanians believe that keeping troops in Iraq is useless for Romania, according to a new poll published on Sunday. 62% disagreed with the mission, while 23% believed maintaining the Romanian contingent in the Gulf country was useful.

5.Latest flood toll: 10 dead The number of victims following extensive floods and mudslides across Romania last weekend rose to ten dead and two missing, according to the latest toll announced on Monday. Intervention teams are still looking for a woman and a child, missing after their village in the county of Suceava was hit by swelling creek waters three days ago.
6.Continental and Dietrich-Honold Logistik invest 5 mln euro in Timisoara Continental AG has announced the consolidation of its investments in the Western Romanian city of Timisoara,. aimed at exploiting the development potential of the tyre market in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Five years after opening the most modern tyre factory in Europe, in Timisoara, work started at a new distribution center in the same city last week, to serve markets in the region.
7.Troops withdrawal keeps fueling disputes in Romania The political disputes surrounding a failed proposal to withdraw Romanian troops from Iraq continued on Monday as the Liberal Party (PNL) held talks over the rebellion of two of its ministers against the PNL-initiated idea last week and President Basescu called the move as an „anti-Romania putsch”.
8.Media mogul launches press agency on Romanian market The group Realitatea Media has launched a new press agency NewsIn on the Romanian market on Monday, which aims at competing with the other leading agencies such as Mediafax (80% market share) and state-owned Rompres. The media agency belongs to the controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, who owns the Realitatea Media group that comprises two TV channels and the press group Catavencu.

10.Romania's unemployment below EU rate The European Union unemployment rate dropped from 8.8% in May 2005 to 8.2% in May 2006, according to a survey by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. Romania had a low 5.5% unemployment rate in May, compared to the highest unemployment rates in Poland (16.4%), Slovakia (15.5%), Greece (9.6%), France (8.8%) and Belgium (8.4%).
11.BT Asigurari forecasts over 50 million Euros pre-tax subscribed bonuses The value of subscribed pre-tax bonuses of BT Asigurari (Insurances) went up 268% to 20.65 million Euros in the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2005. For the current year, the value of the bonuses is forecast at 51 million euros.
