1.What the newspapers say: June 7, 2006 An announcement yesterday that former deputy PM George Copos was sent to court in a fraud case grabs the headlines in most of today’s newspapers, which otherwise opt for spectacular events spanning from tonight’s last round of the national football championship to the paradox of Romanian farmers left without workforce as many choose to make a better living in Western agriculture.
2.Ex- Radio Free Europe journalist takes reins at national newspaper Well-known political commentator and radio and TV host Emil Hurezeanu has been named editorial manager at Romanian newspaper Romania Libera, a RL press release says. Emil Hurezeanu is reputed among the Romanian public since the times when everybody was listening to Radio Free Europe, where he was head of the Romanian department, and since he ran the Romanian section fo the Deutsche Welle radio.
3.Rompetrol to invest 27 million USD in local natural gas deposit The Rompetrol group through its Upstream division will start reactivation, testing and development works at a natural gas deposit in Southern Romania in three months – an investment that may exceed 27 million USD in the coming four years, according to a company press release.
4.The Guardian: Proof exist that Romania and Poland hosted CIA prisons A Council of Europe report quoted by the British newspaper The Guardian on Wednesday says solid evidence exists that Romania and Poland allowed the US Central Intelligence Agency establish secret prisons on their territories. According to the newspaper’s version of the report, due to be presented in Paris today, other European states have contributed to the capturing of terrorism suspects or turned a blind eye on such CIA activities on their territories.
5.Service helicopter crashes in Eastern Romania A service helicopter belonging to a Moldovan Republic-based company crashed near the Eastern Romanian city of Barlad on Wednesday. The pilot escaped but was transferred to a local hospital for chest wounds and broken bones. The helicopter was operating missions for farms in the area.
6.Steaua wins Romanian Championship in unprecedented last round Bucharest-based football team Steaua won the Romanian championship on Wednesday at the end of a day full of surprises, that saw rival Rapid unprecedentedly suspended after a series of five players were removed from the field.
7.NGOs protest against governmental "new entry" A group of Romanian NGOs, the Coalition for a Clean Government, urged prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu on Wednesday not to accept the nomination of Conservative leader Dan Voiculescu as deputy prime minister, a seat that was left vacant last week with the resignation of another Conservative, George Copos. Also on Wednesday, Voiculescu said that he would not accept to work with the government unless his tasks as deputy PM are clearly defined, with specific deadlines.
8.Cigarette producers challenge new Fiscal Code Major cigarette producers in Romania have joined the previous protests of SMEs and business organizations by challenging the provisions of the draft Fiscal Code. According to industry representative Gilda Lazar, most excises on tobacco introduced by the draft changes to the Fiscal Code will double the the cigarette trafficking in Romania.
9.22 criminal cases on EU funds-related charges Romanian investigators have identified 22 criminal cases related to deeds against the financial interests of the European Union in Romania in the first four months of 2006, according to a Police press release. 46 people are eyed on suspicions of forgery, misused information, change of funds destination and illegal acceptance of funding by public servants for their cronies in cases related to the use of EU funds in the country.

14.Medicii nu ies de fapt la pensie Conform datelor oferite de Directia de Sanatate Publica Mures, in judet sunt susceptibili de pensionare mai putin de 100 de cadre medicale. Desi masura urma sa fie aplicata din 1 iunie, legea nu beneficiaza de normele care sa reglementeze aceasta masura.
15.Carmelitele In vara anului 1994, calugaritele carmelite plecate in lume pentru gasirea locului perfect de rugaciune, au ajuns pe valea paraului Gudea, in comuna Stanceni. Platoul, prin mijlocul caruia curgea un paraias, marginit de culmi incarcate de brazi uriasi, le-a facut sa se opreasca din cautare, pentru ca un loc mai frumos era imposibil de gasit.

17.George Copos, trimis in judecata pentru evaziune fiscala Dosarul “Loteria Romana”, semnalat autoritatilor de presa inca din iarna anului 2005, a intrat pe rol. Ieri, procurorii anticoruptie au dispus punerea in miscare a actiunii penale si trimiterea in judecata in stare de libertate pentru savarsirea infractiunii de evaziune fiscala a inculpatilor George Copos, Roza Gilio Giuzepe si Ioan Stelian Ratiu
