1.What the newspapers say: June 1, 2006 Romanian newspapers today continue to debate the consolidation of the Romanian media with the takeover of one media group by another, masterminded by a controversial businessman. The reaction of the EU to a Romanian rejection of European support in its fight against bird flu is also discussed, while judicial moves against top politicians and businessmen lately draw considerable attention.
2.Realitatea-Catavencu media takeover challenges EU standards The Romanian group owned by controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, Realitatea Media, announced earlier this week the takeover of another media group, Academia Catavencu. In order to conclude the absorption, SO Vantu must first obtain the approval of the Romanian Audiovisual Council - CNA, as the Romanian law does not allow the concentration of the audiovisual sector.
3.Deputy PM announces his resignation Romanian deputy Prime Minister George Copos announced in a press statement today that he would resign from the Tariceanu government. He confirmed officially his previous statements this morning, when he said in a radio intervention that he made the decision because he disagreed with some of the provisions of the new Fiscal Code draft the Government approved on Wednesday. Copos' gesture comes as Conservative Party leader Dan Voiculescu had announced that unless the Government drops its plans to change its current structure his party was ready to drop their claim for the deputy PM position.
4.Bird flu motion fails in Romanian Senate The upper chamber of the Romanian parliament rejected Thursday a simple motion filed by the opposition Social Democratic Party – PSD, in which the group called for the resignation of Agriculture minister Gheorghe Flutur over his “failure” to manage the bird flu crisis efficiently and promptly.
5.Bird flu hotbeds keep spreading across Romania The number of bird flu hotbeds in Romania rose to 121 across the country over the past 24 hours, five more than on Wednesday, with suspicious cases reported in the counties of Prahova, Arges and Bacau, according to Government spokeswoman Oana Marinescu.
6.President Basescu to leave hospital for good on Friday Romanian President Traian Basescu will leave the Bucharest hospital where he spent the last couple of weeks on Friday and will restart work at the presidential HQ. He’s been following a post-op recovery program after he suffered a surgical intervention for hernia in early May.
7.New Fiscal Code provisions not requested by EU The draft Fiscal Code the Romanian Government presented this week poses a series of issues related to Romania’s obligations towards the EU. Many of the provisions in the document are typical Romanian innovations and may bring distortions to certain markets, in contradiction with European policies.

The Romanian Patriarchy announced Thursday it was categorically opposing a series of events that are part of the GayFest festival taking place in Bucharest these days. The Orthodox Church believes such occurrences in public areas are “an attack on morality, on the sacred institution of family and a danger for the younger generations”.
9.Foreign investments in Romania may exceed 10 bln euro in 2006 The value of foreign investments in Romania may rise above 10 billion euro in 2006 – including the privatization of the Savings House (CEC) and the Erste Bank payment for its Romanian privatization target, the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR). The total value of foreign investments exceeded 1.7 billion euro in the first quarter of the year alone.
10.Microsoft to open technical support center in Romania Microsoft will open a Technical Support Center worth more than 13 million euro with a possibility of further investments in Romania, to serve the company clients in Germany, France, Britain and the United States. Talks in this regard started five months ago when a Dutch-based consulting firm contacted the Romanian Agency for Foreign Investments (ARIS) to evaluate what Romania has to offer.
