2.Bird flu nightmare continues: 115 hotbeds Romanian vets placed parts of Bucharest District 5 under quarantine on Sunday night after tests confirmed the presence of the bird flu virus in the area. The quarantine was removed Monday morning. The city of Pitesti is also affected, while the total number of confirmed hotbeds rose to 89 over the weekend. The number stood at 115 already, come Monday morning.
3.Romanians optimistic about joining EU on time Two thirds of Romanians believe Romania will join the European Union on the set date of January 1, 2007 and that the Union will not opt to postpone the accession, according to a survey by pollster CURS, published this weekend. The survey says some 60% of Romanians believe a postponement of the date would have negative effects on the country.
4.Romania gets two awards in Cannes The Cannes film festival has brought huge joy for Romanian movie people, who won two awards at the ceremonies in the Southern French resort. Director Corneliu Porumboiu was hailed with a “Belle Europa cinema” award for best European film with his first feature firlm “A fost sau n’a fost” (Was it or was it not).
5.Dutch against Romania and Bulgaria accession More than half of the Dutch population are against the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the EU while less than one in five support the process, according to a new poll run by Dutch TV station Nos. According to the poll, 52% of Dutch nationals disagree with a January 1, 2007 accession of Romania and Bulgaria, while 18% support it.
6.Governing alliance discusses potential reshuffle A government reshuffle in Bucharest is being discussed in separate sessions of the Liberal (PNL) and Democratic (PD) parties on Monday, at the initiative of PD leader Emil Boc. According to unofficial sources, a reduced number of portfolios and possible dismissals of certain ministers including those of Health, Agriculture and Education are on the table.
7.Romanian ForMin: Romanian thesaurus issue will not affect EU accession Romania has started re-negotiating its economic and trade treaties with Russia in the light of its planned EU accession. The Foreign Ministry in Bucharest says the country’s European efforts will not affect its economic relations with Moscow and that the issue of the Romanian thesaurus in Moscow will not be discussed.

9.EIB lends Romania 53.5 mln Euros for water supply infrastructure The European Investment Bank (EIB) granted the Romanian Government 29.5 million Euros for investments aimed at improving the water supply services in small and medium towns in six counties: Arad, Harghita, Mures, Prahova, and Suceava.EIB is also lending Romania 25 million Euros for the construction of the first phase of a new wastewater treatment plant to be built in Bucharest.
