1.What the newspapers say: May 18, 2006 Romanians should worry less and work more if they want to join the EU in January 2007, European officials have warned. And so they do, according to newspapers today: fighting bird flu across the country, “killing” companies with high taxation or dealing with controversial GM soy crops.
2.Tests confirm 18 bird flu hotbeds and 23 under suspicion Lab tests have confirmed 18 bird flu hotbeds in several places across the country, while the number of the total suspected hotbeds stays at 23 until the rest of results return from Britain, Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur announced late on Thursday. The poultry meat from Codlea (Brasov county) has been withdrawn from the market.
3.Financial Guard on strike The officers of the Romanian Financial Guard, members of the national trade union of public servants, were on strike on Thursday and said they would stay so after their claims are answered. They demand better office equipment, paid supplementary work and protection in their activities.
4.Bird flu crisis: latest developments Two towns in the central Romanian county of Brasov have been placed under bird flu quarantine with authorities checking everybody who leaves or enters Codlea and Dumbravita. Codlea is the second town in the region, after Fagaras, where such a measure was decided after the most recent outburst of the flu.
5.PwC study: mergers and acquisitions of 5.8 bln USD in 2005 Romania comes second regionally in terms of value and pace of growth of mergers and acquisitions, a new PricewaterhouseCoopers study shows. The number of transactions has tripled compared to 2004 and the total value of the market reached 5.8 billion USD, according to the document.
6.30 companies interested in management at Proprietatea Fund No less than 30 companies have shown interest in taking over the Fund Manager position at the Proprietatea Fund, aimed at providing stocks as compensation for people whose properties were confiscated by the Communist regime. The Proprietatea Fund deadline for the submission of offers expired on May 15.
7.Romanian president runs country from hospital The Romnaian president Traian Basescu is running the country from his hospital office in Bucharest, where he also receives visits. The recovery process is going well, according to physician Mihai Berteanu who estimates the complete recovery might last from six months to one year.
8.50 mln Euros loss for Rafo Onesti in 2005 The oil refinery Rafo Onesti remains in financial difficulty following last year loss of 153.7 mln RON that amplified the company’s public debt. The loss recorded in 2005 was down 60 percent compared to the previous year when it grew to 372 mln RON, but the situation remains grim for the refinery.
9.E.ON Ruhrgas records good profits, but 34 mln Euros loss in Romania E.ON Ruhrgas recorded 17.9 bln Euros sales in 2005, up 35 percent compared to the previous year. The reasons for the rises were low temperatures and expanding business abroad, which accounted for 20 percent of total send out in 2005. E.ON Gaz Romania, part of E. On Ruhrgas, recorded losses of 121 mln RON in 2005.
10.Public mine of Rosia Montana closes down The gold mine in central Transylvanian Rosia Montana will close down five months before the due time because of 50 bln RON debt. 427 employees will lose their jobs. The Canadian company Gabriel Resources awaits the Romanian authorities’ decision regarding the opening of a new exploitation mine in the area.
11.ARO Campulung privatization unprofitable for Romania The privatization of the Romanian SUV-maker ARO Campulung was unprofitable for the Romanian state, a report by a Senate commission concluded. The debts of the Romanian company doubled following its purchase by the American car maker company Cross Lander Inc which sold the Aro assets at undervalued prices.

13.La Rosia Montana se inchide exploatarea miniera a statului roman Pina la sfarsitul acestei luni, exploatarea Miniera de stat Rosia Montana se va inchide din cauza datoriilor acumulate. Pe de alta parte, compania Gabriel Resources spera sa deschida o noua exploatare si a anuntat joi ca a inaintat Ministerului Mediului un Raport de evaluare a Impactului asupra Mediului.
14.Nici un rezultat in cazul Noricai Nicolai La Comisia juridica a Senatului, cea care se ocupa de analizarea cazului senatoarei Norica Nicolai care in urma cu trei saptamani a permis accesul nepoatei sale in sala de sedinte, este liniste. Deocamdata nu se stie nimic despre stadiul anchetei si nici macar daca aceasta a inceput.
15.Cosmarul gripei aviare continua Localitatile Codlea si Dumbravita, din judetul Brasov, au intrat in carantina. Noi suspiciuni de gripa aviara au aparut, joi, intr-un cartier de la periferia Brasovului si pe o strada din centrul orasului. Patronul fermei Drakom Codlea, cel al fermei Patiprod si un medic sanitar veterinar au fost retinuti. Trei pacienti din Codlea au fost testati, la Institutul "Matei Bals" din Bucuresti, dupa ce aveau simptome asemanatoare gripei aviare.
16.Cate firme pun, de fapt, umarul la prosperitatea Romaniei? Doar o mica parte din totalul firmelor inregistrate in Romania desfasoara cu adevarat o activitate. Chiar si multe dintre cele care isi depun bilanturile contabile la timp sunt tinute in viata artificial, pentru incasarea mascata a unor salarii sau pentru realizarea unor afaceri speculative.
17.10 focare de gripa aviara din 27 au fost confirmate Ministrul Agriculturii, Gheorghe Flutur, a anuntat miercuri seara ca testele de laborator au confirmat 10 focare de gripa aviara in localitati din mai multe judete. Pericolul existentei gripei aviare este prezent la 27 de cazuri din judetul Brasov si cele vecine, dar se asteapta rezultatele testelor de laborator din Marea Britanie.
18.Strainii, ispititi la fonduri cu cardul Acces la fondurile de investitii de pe piata romaneasca aveau si pana acum strainii. De la sfarsitul lunii aprilie insa, ei pot plasa banii in Romania doar printr-un click pe internet, iar tranzactia se valideaza cu ajutorul cardului personal.
19.Ultimatum pentru membrii CSM Comisia Europeana le recomanda membrilor CSM sa renunte la celelalte functii pe care le detin, insa putini dintre acestia par dispusi sa accepte. Dupa ce in Raportul prezentat marti Comisia Europeana a tras de urechi Consiliul Superior al Magistraturii, miercuri, primul dintre membrii institutiei care a reactionat a fost chiar ex-presedintele Dan Lupascu.
20.Orban: “Firmele necompetitive mor inca de acum” Colectarea TVA si a accizelor ne-a adus cartonase rosii de la o Uniune Europeana interesata direct sa punem la punct sistemul informatizat de raportare. In definitiv, cele doua taxe detin printre cele mai mari ponderi in veniturile tarilor membre, iar lenea Romaniei ar insemna mai putini bani pentru Italia.
