1.What the newspapers say: May 17, 2006 Romanian newspapers on Wednesday welcome the positive tone of the European Commission report presented before the EP yesterday, on the progress of Romania and Bulgaria towards EU accession. But one cannot hide the disappointment that the EU did not mention January 1, 2007 as a certain date for accession and opted to postpone a final decision for October this year.
2.Barroso: Romania should push hard before finish European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso and his Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn were in Bucharest on Wednesday morning to discuss with Romanian officials the EC recommendations included in the report presented in the European Parliament yesterday. In a press statement after talking to PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu, Barroso said he came to Romania with a message of congratulations for the progress reported so far and a message of trust in Romania’s capacity to join on January 1, 2007 as scheduled.
3.President Basescu back home after surgery President Traian Basescu arrived in Bucharest on Wednesday afternoon, nine days after he underwent a surgical intervention for hernia in a Vienna clinic. He was transferred to the Elias Hospital in the Romanian capital, where he is due to continue his post-op recovery program, immediately after landing.
4.Financial Times: Romanian Justice Minister is integration "hero" Romanian Justice minister Monica Macovei’s “corruption crusade puts Romania back on road to EU”, headlines Financial Times in its latest issue. FT calls Macovei a hero for reviving Romania’s hopes to join the European Union next year, in comparison to Bulgaria which faced postponement threats because it lacked the necessary pace in the fight against corruption and organized crime.
5.Cosmote Romania borrows 30 mln euro from majority shareholder Mobile telephony operator Cosmote Romania signed a deal on Wednesday to obtain a 30 million euro from the Cosmote group as part of its funding program for 2006-2008. The Greek group will provide 400 million euro to its Romanian branch over the next couple of years and the 30 million deal belongs to this funding scheme.
6.Romanian PM appeals for political support for reforms Romanian prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu urged legislators today to vote in favor of draft laws supporting the judicial reform and the fight against corruption so that Romania join the European Union on January 1, 2007. He told the joint chambers of the Parliament in Bucharest that while the country got rid of the “red flags” on these two issues in the latest European Commission report, it didn’t mean the country should cool down its engines as it would be “a huge mistake”.
7.Romanian opposition to support accession efforts The leader of the main opposition group in Romania Mircea Geoana said before the Parliament on Wednesday that his Social Democratic Party (PSD) would propose a political deal with the governing coalition to commonly support the EU accession of the country.
8.Levy partially raised in Rompetrol Rafinare case The Bucharest Tribunal accepted on Wednesday to lift the levy placed on most of Rompetrol Rafinare assets but decided to maintain it on the 5.4 billion shares of the company. The levy has been placed on Rompetrol Rafinare in early March to prevent the transfer abroad of shares belonging to Rompetrol head Dinu Patriciu and two American partners, all investigated under various criminal charges.
9.Bird flu threat grows. Farm manager arrested The number of areas affected by the avian virus is growing in the central Romania county of Brasov. The tests confirmed the virus in other two townships, Sanpetru and Rotbav. The manager of Drakom farm Vasile Dradala was detained for 24 hours on Wednesday for illegal sale of sick poultry. The Government discharged the president and the vice-president of the National Veterinary Authority for bad management.
10.Head of EC Delegation to Bucharest: "Worry about Romania, not about Bulgaria!" The head of the European Commission Delegation to Bucharest Jonathan Scheele told Romanians they should not worry about what was going on in the neighbor Bulgaria, but focus on their own country. The statement came within a press conference on Wednesday, following reports from Strasbourg and Romania that the postponement of a certain accession date was due to Bulgaria’s lobby not to disclose it on May 16.
11.Accession date does not influence countries ratings, Standard&Poor's says The maintenance of stability-oriented fiscal-monetary policy mixes through the EU accession period is more important for the sovereign ratings on Bulgaria and Romania than the precise timing of EU entry, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said in the report "Bulgaria and Romania Sovereign Ratings: A Tale of Two Policy Mixes,” published on Wednesday.

13.Traian Basescu s-a intors in tara Presedintele Traian Basescu a revenit miercuri in Romania, dar nu si la Cotroceni. El va fi internat la Spitalul Elias, pentru recuperare dupa operatia de hernie de disc de la Viena. Medicii urmeaza sa tina o conferinta de presa dupa consultarea pacientului. Partial refacut si mergand destul de greu, presedintele Traian Basescu a iesit, miercuri, in fata presei, la spitalul Universitar din Viena, alaturi de sotia sa, la mai bine de o saptamana dupa ce a fost operat.
14.Reactiile oamenilor politici din Europa dupa decizia Comisiei Ca urmare a prelungirii suspansului privind aderarea Romaniei si Bulgariei, reactiile oamenilor politici din Europa sunt dintre cele mai diverse. Daca baroneasa Emma Nicholson si-a exprimat tot sprijinul pentru cele doua tari, europarlamentarul ecologist Joost Lagendijk apreciaza ca tandemul Romania-Bulgaria nu este corect, precizand ca Bulgaria nu este inca pregatita pentru aderare. Si ministrul afacerilor externe al Marii Britanii si-a exprimat tot sprijinul pentru cele doua tari in timp ce liderul democratilor europeni, Graham Watson s-a aratat ingrijorat de o eventuala criza in viata politica din Romania ca urmare a deciziei de marti.
15.Cursa cu ghinion la Spa, pentru Mihai Marinescu Team-ul Petrom District Racing, impreuna cu pilotul Mihai Marinescu au participat, in weekend-ul trecut, la etapa a doua a Campionatului Nord European al Formulei Renault 2.0. Weekendul de cursa nu a inceput foarte bine pentru Mihai, care s-a confruntat cu probleme tehnice in antrenamentele libere.
16.Mutu, transferat cu acte false Fostul director general al clubului Juventus Torino, Luciano Moggi, a folosit facturi false in transferul mijlocasului Adrian Mutu la gruparea italiana, a anuntat, marti, cotidianul La Stampa. La Stampa scrie ca Moggi a folosit facturi emise de o societate inexistenta din Londra.
17.Noile taxe pe lux, din 2007 „Nu mi se pare exagerat ca pentru o masina de 100.000 de euro sa se plateasca o taxa de 1.000 de euro”, a declarat Sebastian Vladescu, ministrul Finantelor. Din 2007, proprietarii masinilor de lux, iahturilor, scuterelor de apa vor plati impozite mult mai mari decat in prezent.

19.Piata auto se ineaca Vinzarile de autoturisme noi se apropie de punctul de stagnare. Rata de crestere s-a diminuat de la luna la luna. Dupa ce a inregistrat un avans de aproximativ 20% in luna ianuarie din acest an, piata auto romaneasca a scazut turatia pina la 4,6% in luna aprilie.
20.Analistul Stan si laptopul lui minunat A avea un laptop in zilele noastre si a te expune cu el la televizor este, ma gindesc, o maniera de a inspira credibilitate. Ecranul s-a umplut de meserii care necesita consultarea unui laptop si poate ca asta a impus un anume standard.
