2.President Basescu: Romania to catch up with IT advances Romania will manage to catch up with the advances of the IT sector of the European Union within five to ten years, President Basescu said today. He said at the opening of the IT fair CERF 2006 the country should first recover the time lost in this field before it tries to catch up with Western living standards.
3.National Bank int’l reserves up by 147 mln euro in April The currency reserves of the Romanian National Bank – BNR stood at 18.3 billion euro by the end of April 2006, up 147.4 million euro compared to the previous month. Total international reserves (currency and gold) now stand at over 20 billion euro.
4.New dyke collapses. Danube nightmare continues The dyke close to Dorobantu township in the county of Calarasi collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, prompting authorities on high alert. The waters threaten to flood the households. The population is being evacuated. During this morning another dyke in Tatina failed, in the same county.
5.Black Sea air crash kills 113 An Armenian Airbus A320 plane with 113 people on board, including at least 6 children, crashed in the Black Sea on Tuesday night, 6 kilometers off the coast of Sochi, the Southern Russian resort.
6.Bank Austria Creditanstalt: Romanian inflation to reach 7.5% in 2006 The GDP of Romania may rise by 5.6% in 2006, considerable lowwer than January predictions of 6.3%, according to a report by Bank Austria Creditanstalt, a member of the Unicredit group. The BA-CA study says the Romanian inflation will rise to 7.5% this syear, much above the National Bank target of 5%, and a current account deficit of 9.6% in 2006 and 9.3% in 2007.
7.World Press Freedom Day celebrated in Bucharest The Romanian media institutions took part to the Media Camp organised on Wednesday in Bucharest, on the occasion of the World Press freedom Day. Reporters, editors, anchor persons got in direct contact with their public. Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, the day is celebrated each year on May 3.
8.Romanian Govt to invest in ski slopes The Romanian government endorsed a law that will expand the national program for mountainous tourism development that entails establishment of new ski slopes and rehabilitation of others. The investments will cover all facilities required for winter sports.
9.American consultant signs contract for Romtelecom shares stock listing Almost half of the shares belonging to the telephone company Romtelecom are to be listed on the stock market with the assistance from the American investment consultancy company Credit Suiss First Boston, following a contract signed with the Ministry of Communications and IT (MCTI), which holds 45.99 percent of the Romtelecom shares.

12.Romanian president decorates champion handball team President Traian Basescu honoured with Sport decorations the Steaua handball players and the team for the winning of the Challenge Cup title. The president appreciated that the team sports and the success they have yielded represent a hallmark for Romania. Steaua Bucharest won the Challenge Cup on Sunday, following victory against the Portugese Sporting Horta, with 34-27.
