1.What the newspapers say: May 2, 2006 The introduction of the sin tax in Romania keeps a high level of media attention on Tuesday – one of those rare days when there is no short list of events everybody covers. While some newspapers focus on economy and taxation, others turn their eyes to EU and especially on Britain, a well appreciated friend of Romania that is sanctioned for what some say is mocking at Romanians with its visa delivery system.
2.MediaIndex.ro : who’s who in Romania media business The first online database of media companies in Romania will be available starting Wednesday, March 3 and promises to clear up a lot of dubious issues about who owns what in the Romanian press. The portal, called Media Index, is launched by a Romanian NGO, the Center for Independent Journalism with the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
3."Organized crime" businessman stays free A Romanian businessman investigated for organized crime activities will stay free during judicial procedures, the Bucharest Tribunal decided today, against a prosecutors’ request to arrest him preventively. Businessman Marian Iancu was arrested April 4 this year but was shortly freed as the Bucharest Appeals Court decided that an arrest warrant issued on his name was illegal.
4.Danube threatens new floods Romanian authorities intervened in an area along the Romanian banks of Danube again on Tuesday as river waters started to rise again and threatened to flood several villages in the Southern Romanian county of Dolj. Intervention teams have been trying to breach several dykes close to the settlements of Carna, macesu and Plosca to prevent further flooding in the area.
5.BusinessWeek magazine in Romanian press kiosks A licensed Romanian edition of the American magazine BusinessWeek is to be launched on May 3, under headlines adapted to Romanian market but also covering international business trends. The content of the magazine focuses on market surveys, analyses, and reports on different Romanian economy aspects.
6.Rafo Onesti increases capital by 28.6 mln RON The refinery RAFO Onesti increased its social capital to 432 million RON, following the shareholders’ decision to add 28.6 million RON, the equivalent of 11,449 000 shares. The sum is provided by shareholder Balkan Petroleum Ltd and is aimed at investments in environment protection and modernising technology.
7.Prices up for tobacco and alcohol Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages will be more expensive on the Romanian market within days, following the inclusion of a new sin tax into the excise value. The sin tax was envisaged in order to reduce excessive consume of alcohol and tobacco and to provide additional money to the Health budget.
8.Survey: Half of Romanians would vote for governing alliance Almost half of Romanians (45%) would vote the governing DA alliance made up of the Liberal and Democratic Parties, if elections took place next Sunday, according to a new survey by the IMAS Institute. President Traian Basescu still holds the first place in Romanians’ hearts. PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu is the second most popular, followed by PSD leader Mircea Geoana and PRM leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor.
10.PSD a dat mici si bere la tot cartierul Marian Vanghelie a adunat in fata Palatului Parlamentului mii de bucuresteni dornici de mancare, alcool si concerte gratis. Si a adus la intalnire toata floarea cea vestita a PSD-ului. Au lipsit doar fostii presedinti ai partidului, Ion Iliescu si Adrian Nastase. Primul a avut scutire medicala, dar a fost prezent in alta parte. Nastase, in schimb, nici macar nu a fost invitat. Toate ziarele de azi remarca vanatoare de popularitate in care s-a lansat presedintele PSD, Mircea Geoana.
11.Ion Gavrila Ogoranu a incetat din viata 1 mai a fost ultima zi in care Ion Gavrila Ogoranu a putut fi alaturi de cei pe care i-a iubit cel mai mult: „fratii romani". La finalul unei grele suferinte, sufletul incercat al celui mai faimos luptator anticomunist s-a ridicat la cer, la varsta de 83 de ani. Din 1948, anul in care a fugit in muntii Fagaras, si pana in 1976, cand a fost arestat in Cluj, Badia Ogoranu a organizat rezistenta armata si a incercat sa stabileasca legaturi cu americanii.
12.De ce are PSD nevoie de baroni regionali (de Dan Tapalaga) Ascultati-l pe Dincu! Marele iluzionist al PSD a inteles o realitate simpla: politica fuge dupa bani, iar miliardele UE nu mai trec musai prin Bucuresti. Partidul a intrat in metamorfoza: se divide ca sa poata controla retelele de baroni locali.
13.Lectiile Ungariei (de Emil Hurezeanu) Ungaria isi consolideaza democratia parlamentara de tip occidental, intr-o formula foarte asemanatoare cu cea germana. O dreapta puternica este flancata de o stanga puternica. Optiunea tertiara asigura alternativa celor nemultumiti de stanga sau de dreapta, dar in parametrii liberal-democratici, iar orientarea nationalist-extremista este tot mai respinsa de electorat.

Viitoarea lui mireasa a dat un interviu revistei TV Mania in care se coboara de la cei 1,80 de metri pe care ii masoara, fix la gatul fostei iubite a omului de afaceri, Anna Lesko.
16.Gigi Becali nu e suparat Finantatorul FC Steaua, Gigi Becali, a declarat ca nu este suparat dupa infringerea, cu scorul de 2-0, inregistrata, duminica, in partida de pe teren propriu cu Rapid, si crede ca in lupta pentru titlu se afla doar echipa antrenata de Cosmin Olaroiu.
17.Giulestenii viseaza la event Rapid a devenit noul lider al clasamentului Diviziei A, dupa ce a dispus in derby-ul etapei a 25-a de Steaua, cu scorul de 2-0. Increderea populatiei in seful statului s-a reflectat si in intentia de vot pentru ADA, in timp ce increderea de care se bucura premierul Calin Popescu Tariceanu este mult sub cota lui Basescu, dar si a Aliantei.

20.Deficitele vor creste pana in 2010 Potrivit estimarilor Comisiei Nationale de Prognoza (CNP), pana in anul 2010 vor creste constant atat exporturile, cat si importurile Romaniei, iar deficitul balantei comerciale si cel de cont curent vor fi din ce in ce mai mari. Cu toate acestea, inflatia va scadea pana sub 3%.
