1.What the newspapers say: April 27, 2006 For the first time in many days Romanian newspapers turn their eyes from the Danube flood crisis in the south of the country. Instead they focus on tonight’s match between Steaua Bucharest and Middlesbrough in the second leg of the UEFA Cup semifinals, on the death of a former minister and on the effects of the ex-Communist regime in 2006. And one newspaper reports a Hungarian Popular MEPs intervention at the EC for not considering the situation of Hungarians in Romania when it analyzes the country’s preparation to join the EU.
2.Romanian soldier killed in Iraq At least three Italian troops and one Romanian soldier have been killed in a bomb attack in southern Iraq, the Romanian and Italian Defense Ministries confirmed on Thursday. A fourth Italian was seriously injured in the incident, occurred as the troops were patrolling an area in the city of Nasiriya.

Romania and Bulgaria should not lose pace in the reform process and should prove they have the necessary structures to continue their fight against organized crime and corruption in order to guarantee a normal economy and society prior to their EU accession. The signal came from EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn on Wednesday.

5.Danube pressure breaks new dykes Danube dykes in Romania continue to collapse under flooding waters as Romanian authorities say the river flow will remain high for as long as 35 days from now on. The latest protection dyke broke down in the town of Ostrov, Tulcea county on Wednesday night, prompting the evacuation of over 500 local people.
6.16 000 evacuated due to Danube rampage Almost 16, 000 persons have been evacuated from the areas affected by the Danube flooding and relocated in schools, tents, and other facilities fit for human habitation, according to the last report presented on Thursday by the Romanian Ministry of Interior.

8.MOL to invest 8 mln Euros in Romania in 2006 The company MOL announced on Thursday plans to invest some 40 mln euros in Romania within 2005-2007, following other investments of 20 mln euros up to this moment. This year, MOL will extend its network with new six gas stations, to be build in Greenfield system, that amount to 8 mln Euros.

Steaua striker Nicolae Dica scored first (16’) and Dorin Goian followed suit in the first half, which ended with 1-2, after Maccarone lowered down the difference when scoring in min.33. The second half brought the equalizer goal for Boro, scored by Viduka (64') and the goal that marked Boro’s lead by Riggott in min.74. The match fate was sealed by Maccarone's goal in min. 90.
10.Reactions to Romanian soldier's death in Iraq Romanian president Traian Basescu expressed his condolences for the death of Corporal Bogdan Hancu in the terrorist attack in Iraq on Thursday morning and assured the family of his support. The American ambassador to Bucharest Nicholas Taubman also expressed his deepest sorrow for the death of the Romanian soldier and sent a condolences letter to his family.
11.New business center in western Bucharest Anchor Group is to construct one of the biggest deluxe office buildings in Bucharest, Anchor Plaza, of 33,000 sqm total surface, and made of three blocks of 13 stories, fully equipped withTV and phone cables, internet, surveillance circuit, parking. The investment amounts to approx. 25 mln Euros. The project is designed by B Design Architecture.

13.Olli Rehn lauda Romania, nu si Bulgaria Comisarul european pentru extindere, Olli Rehn, a prezentat miercuri, in Parlamentul European ultima evaluare a Romaniei inaintea Raportului de tara al Comisiei Europene din 16 mai. Olli Rehn a declarat ca obiectivul sau este aderarea Romaniei si Bulgariei in ianuarie 2007, dar ca datoria lui e sa se asigure ca ambele tari sunt pregatite pentru aderare, transmite BBC.
14.Trei autostrazi intr-una singura si ciuruita Toate reparatiile de pe autostrada Bucuresti-Pitesti au costat 400 de milioane de euro incepind din 1998. Cu acesti bani se mai faceau doua asemenea autostrazi. Doar in acest an Ministerul Transporturilor a alocat 277 de milioane de euro pentru reparatia a 23 de kilometri de autostrada.
15.Primii 100 de lustrabili Desi au trecut 16 ani de la caderea regimului comunist, efectele aplicarii unei eventuale legi a lustratiei nu vor fi atat de nesemnificative pe cat s-ar putea crede. Potrivit CV-urilor publicate pe site-urile diverselor institutii publice, un important numar de persoane cu functii in politica, administratie si sistemul de justitie s-ar putea afla in situatia de a intra sub incidenta legii.
16.Barcelona si Arsenal in finala Ligii Campionilor Barcelona a terminat 0-0 meciul de pe teren prorpiu cu AC Milan si a obtinut calificarea in finala Ligii Campionilor. In tur, catalanii s-au impus cu 1-0 chiar pe terenul milanezilor. Ambele echipe s-au intrecut in ratari imense. Arbitrul partidei a anulat lui Milan un gol valabil inscris in minutul '70.
