1.What the newspapers say: April 19, 2006 Grim weather forecasts for the period of Orthodox Easter are accompanied by revelations of irregularities in the efforts of Romanian officials to limit the damage produced by Danube floods over the past week, according to Romanian newspapers today. They also discuss the new legislation on national security and review the Steaua-Middlesbrough match in the UEFA Cup semifinals tomorrow.
2.Danube still raging in southern Romania The danger of expanding Danube floods remains high in the southern Romanian county of Dolj, where a breach in a local dam might lead to the flooding of a huge area. Six thousand people were evacuated from the area by Wednesday morning and another ten thousand risk are in danger and risk forced evacuation as they are trying to protect their belongings.In pictures: Danube floods 2006
3.Danube levels receding but rain may increase risk The Danube flow in the area where the river enters Romanian territory, at Bazias in western Romania, was receding down to 15,200 cubic meters/second on Wednesday morning, but was still high above the multi-annual monthly average of 7900 cm/s. According to the Environment Ministry, the flow was rising downstream from the Portile de Fier dams, especially in the areas of Gruia-Giurgiu and Braila-Tulcea.

I then spoke with a friend about our Audi A6 Romanian owner and I could only agree with my friend when he noted that many Romanians working abroad indulge in similar excesses with the money they earned abroad and so their contribution to the Romanian economy was rather limited.

6.Rompetrol Downstream expects 37% growth in 2006 The retail division of the Rompetrol Group, Rompetrol Downstream, expects it will reach a business figure of 685 million US dollars in 2006, up 37% compared to 2005. The boost is supported mainly by expansion projects for its own fuel distribution network and increasing fuel sales.
7.Party funding law changed The Romanian Government approved on Wednesday a draft law on the funding of political parties, which will compel them to present a complete list of funding sources, reduce the maximum level of donations from party members and establish a single authority to check funding operations instead of the current four.
8.Sin tax yields significant excises hike The Romanian Government decided on Wednesday to include the sin tax within the excise category for its collection. The news comes in the wake of the Fiscal Code adjustment. Starting this July, the alcohol excise will go up 60 percent, while tobacco 29 percent.
9.Ordinance to privatize state companies rejected as protest method Deputies of the Privatization Commission rejected on Wednesday the ordinance regarding the privatization of the Romanian Savings House, the National Lottery and the National Printing House, protesting against the fact that the Finance minister Sebastian Vladescu did not take part to the meeting.
10.Belgium takes further step in endorsing Romania's EU accession The Belgian House of Representatives endorsed on Tuesday Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the EU treaties, following the ratification of the accords by the Belgian Senate on March 30.
11.Romanian govt approves budget rectification The Romanian government approved on Wednesday the state budget’s rectification that supplemented expenses with 1 bln Euros in order to provide more money for infrastructure in Transportation and Education top priority fields. This move led to the hike of the inflation rate from 0.5 to 0.9% of the GDP.
12.Guvernul a aprobat rectificarea bugetului de stat pe 2006 Guvernul a aprobat astazi proiectul de ordonanta de urgenta cu privire la rectificarea bugetului de stat pe anul 2006 prin care sunt alocate sume suplimentare pentru demararea unor proiecte de investitii.

16.CNA interzice spoturile bancare mincinoase CNA interzice televiziunilor sa mai difuzeze reclamele bancare mincinoase. Daca in 10 zile nu conving bancile sa prezinte spoturi cu prezentarea corecta a produselor, posturile tv vor fi amendate usturator. Cele cu spoturi interzise sunt Banc Post, ABN AMRO, BCR Leasing, Alpha Bank si OTP.

18.Au inundat satele ca sa protejeze afacerile unei pesediste Localitatile Rast, Negoi, Catane si Bistretul Nou ar fi putut scapa de inundatiile catastrofale carora le-au cazut victima daca acum cinci zile autoritatile ar fi aprobat o inundare controlata prin spargerea unui dig. Salvarea satelor ar fi dus insa la inundarea unei crescatorii de peste si a unei ferme, ambele apartinind Mariei Schutz, om de afaceri din Craiova si consilier judetean PSD.
19.Atentie, la aprovizionarea de Paste! Pentru ca in aceasta perioada pe piata este oferita o diversitate mare de produse pentru Paste, inspectorii de la Protectia Consumatorilor recomanda atentie sporita la achizitionarea acestora si la preturile afisate ale produselor. ANPC va spune cum trebuie sa arate carnea de miel si de unde sa cumparati oua.
20.Oprea: "Pe Lazea l-au amenintat ca-i omoara copiii" Consilierul de stat al premierului, Marius Oprea, sustine ca demisia lui Dan Lazea, reprezentantul PD in CNSAS, ar fi venit in urma unor amenintari cu moartea la adresa copiilor sai. Dan Lazea a infirmat spusele lui Oprea.
