1.What the newspapers say: April 10, 2006 A party celebrating the victory of Bucharest football team in the UEFA Cup quarterfinals last week turns into a sour event for President Traian Basescu, according to newspaper reports that insist on the head of state’s driving under the influence from the party. Media attacks on the President are accompanied by political quarrels between Basescu’s Democrats and their Liberal partners from the governing coalition. The threat of floods is also tackled in the papers, as do a series of fiscal moves and the spiraling real estate prices across the country.

5.PM intervenes against latest form of lustration law The head of the National Liberal Party (PNL), prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, intervened in a debate that’s gripped the Romanian political scene for the last several weeks on Monday. He said the latest version of the draft Lustration Law, which has been a Liberal initiative, contains amendments that have modified the initial draft and have turned into "excesses" that must be corrected.
6.Danube floods hit southern Romania Rising Danube waters broke a dam in Isaccea, Tulcea county in south-east Romania on Monday as the Environment Ministry in Bucharest warned the river is swelling along most of Romania’s southern border and down to the Danube Delta. The Isaccea dam was considered to be one of the most secure dams in the area, but it broke before the tides threatening dozens of households and confirming grim reports of Danube floods for the coming days.
7.Private initiative lacks momentum in Romania The development of small and medium enterprises - SMEs in Romania stands below the European average with 14 SMEs per 1,000 Romanians, according to a European Commission representative to Bucharest, Giorgio Ficcarelli. 8.Senate passes lustration law The Romanian Senate passed on Monday the draft law on lustration, aimed at revealing the former top Communist Party members who still hold official positions in the state. 69 Senators voted in favor of the legislation with 42 votes against – mostly from the opposition Social-Democratic and Greater Romania parties - and nine abstentions.
9.Industrial production up 3.5% in January-February 2006 Romanian industrial production rose 3.5 percent in January-February this year, compared to the same period in 2005, with a 2.9 percent growth in February alone, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS) published on Monday.

17.Partidul Socialist Ungar face un pas spre victorie Dupa numararea a 99,5 la suta din voturile exprimate in alegerile din Ungaria, Comisia Electorala Nationala estimeaza ca Partidul Socialist de guvernamant impreuna cu partenerul sau de coalitie, Alianta Liber Democratilor au 113 mandate, in timp ce FIDESZ, principalul partid al opozitiei conservatoare, detin 97 mandate, iar Forumul Democrat Maghiar 2.

20."Transferuri de imagine"(de Ioana Lupea) Asocierea cu Gigi Becali inseamna, pentru o parte din electoratul lui Traian Basescu, alunecarea spre populismul gretos si mistica triviala. Sunt acei alegatori, dispusi sa-i tolereze sau chiar sa-i incurajeze presedintelui nonconformismul, constienti ca, prin testarea limitelor constitutionale si ale convenientelor, acesta schimba ceva fundamental in politica romaneasca.
