1.What the newspapers say: April 04, 2006 A positive review of progress in Romania and Bulgaria on the path of EU accession grants extensive coverage in today’s newspapers who quote European Commissioner Olli Rehn’s statements before the EP Foreign Affairs Committee yesterday. The media also warn about the dangerously high levels of Danube, the high level of political tensions around the archives of the former Communist secret police and prepares for the final round of the Steaua-Rapid confrontation in the UEFA Cup quarterfinals.
2.Securitate archives crisis "ended" A political crisis sparked by the naming of a new head for CNSAS, the institution studying the archives of the secret police of the ex-Communist regime in Romania, the Securitate, came to an end on Tuesday as the college supervising the CNSAS dropped its president named late last month and delivered the job to a new candidate for the post. Analyst Cristi Ghinea told that the solution aimed at bringing peace in CNSAS was a compromise that would only ensure a short term solving of the problem.
3.Danube floods threaten 100 towns and villlages Over 100 towns and villages from 10 counties along the Romanian banks of river Danube face a high risk of floods in the period of April 9-11 in case river flow will exceed 13,500-13,600 cubic meters per second, according to an Environment Ministry press release.
4.Romanian Academy celebrates its 140th anniversary The Romanian Academy is celebrating its 140th anniversary with a series of events that continued with a solemn session attended by President Traian Basescu on Tuesday. The Academy is due to elect a new head in a vote on Wednesday in which five Academy members will try to replace Eugen Simion, who’s been running the institution for eight years.

6.Preventive arrest warrant for businessman Marian Iancu A preventive arrest warrant was issued Tuesday on the name of businessman Marian Iancu for his role in a series of frauds related to the Rafo refinery in Eastern Romania, a case that also involves the already arrested businessman Ovidiu Tender. Iancu is investigated for a producing a prejudice of 270 million RON to the Rafo refinery.
7.Farmers march in Bucharest Some 3,000 farmers have been protesting in Bucharest on Tuesday against governmental policies in the agriculture sector. They’re calling for bigger subsidies for diesel and agricultural products.
8.Rompetrol Petrochemicals sets partnership with Dow Chemicals Rompetrol Petrochemicals has sealed off a 14-year partnership contract with American Dow Chemicals, based on which the Romanian company will produce polymers under the brand Dow. The contract makes possible the achievement of a turnover of more than $1 billion per year for the petrochimistry division.
9.Former CNSAS leader accuses PM of connections with ex-Communist secret police The fresh former leader of the CNSAS Corneliu Turianu accused Liberal Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu of having collaborated and informed the ex-Communist secret police, aka Securitate. Turianu made the statement a few hours after resigning from the top position within the CNSAS, following the repetition of the vote. The PM denied any connection with the former Securitate.
10.Ex-Secret Service agents work in Economy Ministry, says minister Romanian Economy minister Codrut Seres told the Senate’s Abuse Research Commission that he was aware of the presence in the institution he managed of former secret service agents with economic background and experience, and on their current positions following fair examinations. The former agents are now public servants, most of them working in the external economy sectors within the Ministry.
11.EU Commission slams states over energy monopoly markets The European Commission is to take legal action against 17 EU members that have not implemented the gas and energy regulations regarding competitive market and thus have allowed some companies to create monopolies.
12.Romanians poorest but less indebted in New Europe zone Romania boasts the lowest debts level/capita in the region, but it also has the poorest citizens, according to the "Financial behaviour of the population and the credit evolution in New Europe" study released on Tuesday by UniCredit Romania. However, the Unicredit analysts consider that Romanians’ wealth will increase 17 percent every year until 2008, based on an interest growth of mutual funds and insurance markets, but debts will also grow on average with 22 percent per year.
