1.What the newspapers say: March 31, 2006 Football abounds in today newspapers as the first leg of the UEFA Cup quarterfinals unfolded last night on Rapid Bucharest home turf, with a stadium full of supporters enjoying peacefully the 1-1 final score for the Rapid-Steaua Bucharest match. The CNSAS scandal story is covered in depth by Romanian media on Friday, and so is the weather going wild in some 14 counties of the country. The city of Sibiu, the European cultural capital in 2007, comes back to the front page and the story puts city mayor Johannis to the corner for bad money management.
2.All ten new members, Belgium's Senate ratified Romania, Bulgaria's acession to EU Belgium’s Senate endorsed Romania and Bulgaria’s accession treaty on Thursday with 52 votes in favor and 8 against, announces European Integration Ministry of Romania.The Polish Senate approved Thursday, unanimously, Romania and Bulgaria’s Accession Treaty to the EU. With Lithuania’s endorsement yesterday, all the ten new EU members that joined in May 2004 ratified the accession treaty of Romania and Bulgaria.
3.Non-Government loans up 50% compared to February 2005 Non-government credit rose 50.2 per cent (38.5 per cent in real terms) at the end of this February, compared to February 2005, informs the National Bank of Romania (NBR). Romanian currency loans rose 5.3 per cent (5.0 percent in real terms), while foreign currency loans fell by 2.4 percent if expressed in RON and up 1.3 percent if expressed in euro.
4.Turbid waters at CNSAS. Liberals threaten to revoke body's leader The scandal stirred at the Center for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS) has expanded. A press conference called by Ticu Dumitrescu, an anti-Communist who claims the leadership of the institution, was monopolized by Corneliu Turianu, the man officially voted to lead the body. The Liberals held a meeting on Friday that concluded with a request to the Democrats to withdraw their proposal of Turianu as the head of CNSAS, otherwise the Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu would issue an emergency ordinance to revoke the current body's leader.
5.Gabriel Resources finalizes impact study for Rosia Montana The Canadian company Gabriel Resources announced Thursday that all ten chapters of the impact study for Rosia Montana exploitation had been finalised by the independent experts team Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The result is to be sent to Romanian authorities in April, according to a company’s press release.
6.Natural gas price to rise starting April 1 The price of natural gas will rise 3.6 per cent staring April 1, according to a press release issued by the National Reglamentation of Natural Gas. Following this step within a larger harmonization process, the domestic consumers will pay 830.68 RON/1000 cm if subscribed to Distrigaz Sud and 830.24 RON if subscribed to Distrigaz Nord.
7.President lobbies for Romania’s EU accession at EPP Congress Romanian president Traian Basescu talked on Friday about Romania’s partnerships with EU and NATO at the European Popular Party (EPP) Congress in Rome, assuring the Union that Romania’s accession on January 1 will not create any problems to the Community. Basescu explained his presence at this kind of reunion as an opportunity to address the EPP, the most numerous party in the European Parliament, before the European summit in June, when a decision regarding Romania’s accession date is expected.
8.RACC & MACC Slam Russia The Board of Directors of the Romanian-American Chamber of Commerce and the Moldovan-American Chamber of Commerce denounced the Russian Federation’s March 27th ban on Moldovan wine, calling it an "act of retribution" against Moldova for seeking the removal of Russian troops from its borders, and for Moldova’s support of efforts to prevent smuggling in the region.
9.Former House speaker subpoenaed by General Prosecutor The former speaker of the Romanian House of Deputies Adrian Nastase was subpoenaed to the General Prosecutor’s Office on Friday following a denunciation by the Liberal group of the House which accused Nastase of abuse of office. The denunciation aimed at Nastase’s approach of his own properties search while still House speaker.
10.Apele raman tulburi la CNSAS Scandalul de la Consiliul National de Studiere a Arhivelor Securitatii (CNSAS) continua. Dupa ce pentru vineri se anuntase o conferinta de presa a lui Ticu Dumitrescu, in fata presei s-a prezentat Corneliu Turianu. Intre cei doi a izbucnit o adevarata disputa pentru microfon.
11.Ticul politic (de Traian Ungureanu) Imbrincirea lui Constantin Ticu Dumitrescu pe scarile CNSAS e o abjectie. La fel si planul de a face din Constantin Ticu Dumitrescu presedinte al CNSAS. Lamuriri: prima abjectie e manifestarea unei crize ce dureaza de 16 ani si va dura pina la stingerea prin amnezie. Se ciocnesc o realitate de sistem si o aspiratie fara putere. Deschiderea dosarelor ar fi o binefacere. Insa, pina la minune, avem in fata o imposibilitate istorica si politica.
12.Coasta rupta a lui Basescu (de Dan Tapalaga) Liberalii au iesit din corzi printr-o abila strategie de imagine, cu Ticu Dumitrescu pe post de scut roman. Basescu si ai lui au gresit, subestimind potentialul exploziv al unui subiect delicat.
13.Increderea si sistemul (de Rodica Culcer) La prima vedere, Monica Macovei si Gigi Becali nu au nimic in comun. Priviti insa in lumina rece a cifrelor la care a ajuns cel mai recent sondaj INSOMAR, amandoi se disting prin aceeasi trasatura: cresterea popularitatii.
14.Miros de tamaie la CNSAS (de Andreea Varga) Inca de la inceputurile instalarii doctrinei sovietice si imediat dupa ce au fost intimidati cei care se mai indoiau de binefacerile comunismului s-a format o clasa speciala de turnatori, folosita cu abilitate de catre securitate, exact acolo unde omul de rand avea cea mai mare incredere. 15.Reintoarcerea "produsului" (de Petre Mihai Bacanu) Razboaiele din PSD nu sunt eclipsate nici macar de evenimentele care s-au succedat cu repeziciune in ultimele zile (Legea lustratiei, poticnita intr-o Securitate care a metastazat intreaga societate romaneasca; muribundul CNSAS, din nou in criza, cu alegeri dupa criterii "interpersonale", asa ca n-o sa mai linga nimeni dosarele).
16.Mihaela Radulescu o avertizeaza pe Andreea Marin: "Stefan este un cuceritor" Vedeta Antenei 1 a rupt tacerea. Intr-un interviu acordat revistei Unica, Mihaela si-a spus parerea despre relatia pe care fostul ei sot, Stefan Banica, o are cu Andreea Marin, dar a dezvaluit si motivul pentru care casnicia lor s-a destramat: infidelitatea solistului.
17.Raluca (Big Brother) si Doru Octavian Dumitru, in scandal cu National TV La National TV lucrurile nu merg conform contractelor incheiate. Postul datoreaza bani unor fosti angajati care lupta in instanta pentru a remedia situatia. Desi nu mai colaboreaza cu televiziunea in cauza, Raluca (Big Brother) mai are de primit 1.500 euro, iar Doru Octavian Dumitru, 30.000 euro.

Una si-a format o echipa de vedete interne, „rulate" prin toate productiile proprii, iar cealalta s-a orientat spre emisiunile deschise oamenilor simpli.
