Bronislaw Komorowski, presedintele Camerei inferioare a Parlamentului polonez, a preluat conducerea interimara a Poloniei dupa moartea presedintelui Lech Kaczynski, la 10 aprilie, in catastrofa aviatica de la Smolensk (Rusia).
Fostul presedinte Kaczynski fusese invitat sa participe la ceremoniile de la Moscova, insa nu confirmase oficial daca va lua parte. El urma sa-si anunte decizia dupa vizita la Katyn, unde aveau loc comemorarile a 70 de ani de la masacrarea celor peste 22.000 de ofiteri polonezi de catre politia secreta sovietica. Insa nu a mai ajuns acolo, avionul sau prabusindu-se la aterizare pe aeroportul din Smolensk.
Pentru prima oara dupa 1945, soldatii polonezi au fost invitati sa ia parte la parada militara din Piata Rosie, care marcheaza victoria Moscovei impotriva Germaniei naziste, alaturi de soldati francezi, britanici si americani.
Tragedia aviatica de la Smolensk a dus la o incalzire a relatiilor ruso-poloneze, tensionate pana in prezent.
