Suveranul a facut acest anunt duminica, cu ocazia deschiderii unei noi sesiuni a Majlis al-Shura, la Ryad.
Este pentru prima oara cand femeile saudite vor avea drept de vot si de a fi alese in acest regat ultraconservator, unde se organizeaza doar alegeri municipale.
Consiliile municipale au un mandat de patru ani.
"Incepand cu urmatorul mandat, femeia va avea dreptul sa se prezinte la consiliile municipale precum si reptul de vot in cadrul principiilor islamului", a declarat suveranul.
"Am decis, de asemenea, ca femeile sa participe la Majlis al-Shura in calitate de membri, incepand cu urmatorul mandat", a adaugat el.
Alegerile municipale vor avea loc joi, pentru a doua oara in istoria regatului, dar femeile nu vor putea participa la aceasta runda electorala. Alegerile municipale desemneaza jumatate din cei 285 de consilieri municipali. Cealalta jumatate este numita de guvern.
