Fapta lui a dat nastere unei polemici aprinse in Italia si a dus la aprobarea unui decret care facilita expulzarea cetatenilor comunitari in numele sigurantei publice.
Pentru a demonstra vina acuzatului, procurorul italian Maria Bice Barborini a pus accent pe declaratia Emiliei Neamtu, femeia care a spus ca l-a vazut pe Mailat in timp ce cara in spate trupul Giovannei Reggiani si care a alertat politia - transmite Realitatea TV.
Romulus Mailat a sustinut intotdeauna ca nu a ucis-o pe Giovanna Reggiani, sotia unui inalt oficial din Marina Italiana.

Romulus Mailat e un caz tipic de discriminare si abuz de cea mai ordinara speta. Mai trist e ca un om posibil nevinovat va putea lua 30 de ani de puscarie. Doar e tigan, fara acte, hot, borfas, analfabet ordinar nu? Ce mai conteaza unul in plus sau in minus.
Nu stiu ca autoritatile romane sa fi facut ceva pentru Romulus Mailat si aflarea adevarului - stabilirea clara a vinovatiei (nu sunt probe suficiente) sau a nevinovatiei. Li se rupe oricum in general, dar si mai cu spor in cazul unor tigani.

(in any case in Italy "inchisoare pe viata" doesn't mean really "pe viata". It generally
means to leave jail after 15 years of good behaviour, this is the rule)

Most of people will think it's legitimate to jail him for murder and rape, regardless of his guilt in this specific case. He's a gipsy, we all know he probably did some crimes in his life, so he deserves the worst "death penalty with electroshocks" as some Romanian retard wrote above.
Romanians are highly intolerant and ignorant so you should not expect any mercy for Romulus from the Romanian authorities and society.
The only hope of decency is in Italy's hands. If Romulus will be jailed on the basis of current evidence, this will be a proof that Italian society is no better than Romanian one.
This will also be a sign for Romania that diplomacy will not always be a solution in dealing with Italian issues. Alternative approaches can be considered.
It'll be interesting to see how the sentence will be argumented.

s-au inteles cu totii ca sa aiba un exemplu si cva sa castige alegerile, pe care de altfel le-au pierdut?!?( ma refer la veltroni, marele aparator al africanilor care vand suveniruri pe cerceaf la colosseum, caste sant'angelo si peste tot!)
Ar fi mai onest sa spui "bagati-l la puscarie pe viata pentru ca este un tigan". Pe bune, ar fi mult mai OK daca ti-ai asuma dezgustul rasial. Ar insemna ca ai un punct de vedere.
Dar nu fii ipocrit si nu spune ca e "criminal" pentru ca nu ai dovezi si nici altii nu au. Iar cazul este foarte posibil sa fie o inscenare de imagine pe fondul unor aversiuni profunde fata de fenomene ca imigratia si cultura tiganilor.
Deci, putina onestitate. E vorba de viata unui om, pentru numele lui Dumnezeu.
